Christopher Columbus

The inventions of Germany have strongly impacted early America. Martin Behaim Was a German map maker navigator and merchant. 1492 was the year the earliest globe was made called "Nürnberg Terrestrial Globe".

Christopher Columbus was a well-known explorer. He is known looking for India, but he found what is known as the Americas.

To the New world he brought disease, and he was the first of many men who will come to kill the people they find.

Sailing

On one of his journeys, his ship broke up and he had to live on an island for a year until somebody came to get him.

Columbus did not discover America, but he did find the island of Hispaniola. Several Spanish, French, and English explorers landed in several areas of the future United States. In 1513 Balboa lead a party across the Isthmus of Panama and was the first European to see the Pacific ocean. In 1519 Cortes marched into Mexico. In 1531 Pizarro led 180 men into Peru. From 1540-1542 Coronado and de Soto explored the American Southwest. Coronado discovered the Grand Canyon. In 1497 Cabot explored along the coast of Newfoundland and the northern regions of America.

Christopher Columbus was trying to discover a new way to China, but instead of sailing to China he accidentially discovered South America. BUT... he was a failure because the Vikings discovered South America not Columbus, he lied to the King and Queen of Spain saying that he discovered a new route to China so he was arrested and killed. Christopher Columbus had two sons, Diego and Ferdinand, by Filipa Moniz Perestrelo and Beatriz Enriquez de Arana respectively. Diego died in 1526 and Ferdinand died in 1539.

Christopher Columbus named America after Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian map maker who showed Columbus that the lands discovered by him (Christopher Columbus) were actually separate lands, not an extension of the Spice Islands and part of Asia as Columbus believed.

Christopher Columbus did not name America after Amerigo Vespucci. That was done by a German cartographer/mapmaker named Martin Waldseemüller in 1507.

Waldseemüller was mislead by a book apparently written by Matthias Ringmann, which was based on a letter said to have been written by Vespucci, but which has proved to be a fake.

Waldseemüller later produced other maps without the name America on them, but in 1538 Gerardus Mercator applied the name to the entire New World in his maps, and this was accepted, even though Spain did not recognize the name for over 200 years, stating that Columbus should get the credit.

I have read the translation of his journal entries and for what he saw he wasn't far off. I think, though, that he is looking at the situation through the lens of having found India rather than finding a whole new area.
