Seeds form the basis of a cockatiel's diet. Cockatiels are parrots, and parrots have strong, curved beaks to enable them to crack seeds and nuts, their favourite foods.
Why does the older male cockatiel dance back and forth and bite his cage when looking at the female?
he is probably trying to attract her for mating reasons.
Small parrots don't do well with big ones, the African grey will become dominant, and it will act aggressively with the cockatiel. a cage is not a good idea no matter how big it is, only an aviary will be good enough to house them.
Why are my cockatiel's feathers getting darker?
I have five of them - it is typically through age and shedding, nothing more.
Do cockatiels' feathers on their heads have feeling in them?
No, they aren't blood feathers. If you cut them, it wouldn't hurt, but if you pulled them out, it would.
Cockatiels are lovely birds. That being said, they *can* be noisy and boisterous, so if you are not used to chatty birds, then you should pass on the cockatiel breed. They are very friendly, lovable, and the hand-raised ones are absolutely adorable. They tend to be skittish and timid; loud noises startle them and they tend to suffer from "night frights"; however, a small night light usually cures them of this problem. Like all pet birds, they explore the world with their beaks. This means they can accidentally ingest harmful things and die as a result. Make your home safe for a toddler with wings -- if a baby human would die from chewing on an electrical cord, then so would a cockatiel. If your home is safe for a baby, then it will be safe for a cockatiel.
Again, cockatiels are not annoying *if* you are willing to spend the time to provide them with love, attention, and your company. Fully research the field; find people who own them and get acquainted before buying your own. Ask yourself if you honestly have the time and patience for these needy and wonderful birds. They can be loud. They can be messy. When feeding, they have a tendency to spray the food down on to the floor. In the wild, the flock makes sure that there is food available for all and so, when they eat, they make sure some falls to the ground to provide for others. Can you handle the mess and accept this as just part of their natural behaviour?
If you leave the room, then they will call out to you as you are part of their flock. Can you handle this "noise"?
If you are honestly willing to share your life with these wonderful birds, then the breed is absolutely fantastic and rewarding. But you must be honest with yourself in terms of what you are willing to put up with. Afterall, you will become their sole provider and flock-mate, and that is a responsibility for conscientious people.
Do cockatiels eat millet spray to feed their young?
Yes, among other things.
They will regurgitate everything when feeding.
You should keep her diet complete, millet should really be more of a treat.
Can a cockatiel see ahead because its eyes are at the sides of its head?
When a cockatiel wants to see ahead, it simply turns its head sideways to look straight ahead.
Does a short crested cockatiel mean it is unhealthy?
If the rest of the bird's feathers are fine, then the cockatiel is not unhealthy. There can be subtle differences in birds of the same species, including the length of their crest or even tail feathers. A young bird will often have a shorter crest, but it is most likely to just be the result of a slight genetic difference.
A crest may also be affected during a routine moult.
How long do cockatiels live for?
they live between 15-20 years with good care they can live 30 or over.
Can female cockatiels whistle?
They can, but it is the males that are more likely to learn to whistle.
Do cokatailes like long drives?
I'm assuming you mean 'cockatiels,' the bird. :) But, no, they usually don't. Many cockatiels won't stop moving around and yelling, since they have no idea where they are.
How do you tell how old your cockatiel is?
Well I just Googled that question, I counts about the bars on a parrakeets head, the eye color, or the numbers on the bird's leg band. I got two parakeets myself and I got them in 2009. They are more than 8 month's old. :o)
What does it mean if your cockatiel sings?
This is usually a good sign which means it is happy and content. It can also be singing to another bird which it has chosen for a mate or singing for your attention and approval.
Some have learned to mimic human words, but they do not understand their meaning.
cockatiels CAN talk. but it requires persistance and a lot of patients, there are a lot of theorys that if you record a tape of your voice and play it over and over again, this does work! but the cockatiel will get bored and only learn a couple of words. the other way is to cover the cage with something dark, and say phraises to it. or you could go under the blanket and talk directly to it, saying "good boy/girl" or "pretty parrot". i hope helped :DDD
Can a male finch live with a female cockatiel?
A male finch can't really live with a female cockatiel as you should not mix straight-beaked and hooked-beak birds.
