With herpes any thing can happen because every one that contracts it is different. The Murphy's law of herpes lol.

Some people get future breakouts some don't. If you have a healthy immune system you may not get another break out or you may get one a few months or years later on.

How many types of herpes are known to cause genital and oral herpes?

Just the two common types of herpes. Oral and genital herpes.

Oral herpes can affect the genitals, for example if some one with a visible cold sore (which are caused by oral herpes) gives you oral sex then you could end up with oral herpes on your genitals.

Genital herpes mainly likes to live on the genitals. It can but doesn't commonly affect the mouth. In order to get it on the mouth you would have to give some one with a break out of herpes oral sex.

Does semen contain the herpes virus?

Most articles you will read state that herpes is transmitted skin-to-skin only; and body fluids do not contain the herpes virus. I have however seen a few articles that cited a person contracting the virus via sperm. Bottom line......it is NOT likely that sperm will infect a person with herpes. I would not go as far to say that it is impossible.

Can you get herpes from your own cold sores?

The herpes virus is spread by skin-to-skin contact with an infected person, at the location where the virus is active, during a time when they are shedding virus.

If a person shedding cold sore virus at the mouth performs oral sex on you, you can get genital herpes.

You can not get genital herpes from your own cold sores, unless you are very flexible.

Many people are under the mistaken impression that the type of herpes that causes cold sores is different from the type that causes genital herpes. This is a myth; herpes types 1 and 2 each can cause oral or genital lesions.

One third of the population is unaware that they have the virus, that's why it's being spread so easily. One out of 5 people has the virus, and that number is growing. There is no cure. There are antivirals that are prescribed that keep the number of outbreaks down, but like I said, just because you don't have a sore, doesn't mean you can't get it. Acyclovir and Valacyclovir are the two most prescribed anti-virals.

How can one take steps to get rid of a cold sore?

I know how bad a cold sore could be but the best way is cleaning it every hour with soup and water on a paper towel and the puss will come out. Also you can use abreva or other. Good luck will your cold sore hope this helps.

it has to run its course but here are a few things to do to avoid the intensity of the cold sore and its symptoms. Don't expose yourself to the sun for long periods of time, get lots of rest, don't pick at it, this will only make it spread. If you do touch it, WASH your hands immediately! Stay away from foods like chocolate and peanut butter. Use a warm tea bag and place it on the cold sore for about 30 minutes. Ice also helps relieve the inflammation. Keep it covered with an ointment whether its medicinal or something like Carmex (OTC). Sleep or rest is very important because your immune system is compromised during this time. You can also buy Abreva (OTC) which works very well on the symptoms or have your doctor prescribe Acyclovir which is an ointment for viral infections. The sooner you start to treat the symptoms, the sooner it will go away (back into it's dormant state). REMEMBER, WASH your hands even after applying these ointments. Stress, weather, long exposure to extreme temperatures either hot or cold, an unhealthy diet are predisposing factors for the virus to come out of its dormant stage.

How long can a cold sore virus survive on a toothbrush?

In your body, forever.

outside of the human body, in studies I've read:

12 hours under freezing conditions where the virus is literally frozen and then thawed.

on fabrics, it depends on the fabric, some up to 48 hours

water, tap:4 hours given the presence of certain proteins etc.

humid environments mixed with plastic seems to allow a longer survival

the presence of water treating chemicals such as Cl2, seems to allow for much less >0 survival of the virus.

dry conditions, such as on concrete with zero moisture >0

herpes needs very specific conditions to survive outside of the human body but this does not mean it cannot be contracted by non-venereal means.

What happens if you freeze a cold sore?

I use ice cubes every time I feel one starting to raise it ugly head. As soon as you start to feel the little bump, just hold the ice on the area till it melts. Do this a couple times a day for 2 or 3 days. Works for me every time.
