The Cold War fueled competition between the United States and the Soviet Union in the Space Race, as both countries sought to demonstrate their technological superiority and military strength through achievements in space exploration. The rivalry led to significant advancements in space technology and exploration as both nations raced to achieve milestones such as sending the first human to space and landing on the moon.

The arms race was dangerous because neither the Soviet Union or the U.S could protect its people from a nuclear attack.

There was only rarely any direct military action, such as when the Soviets shot down a passenger plane, or captured one of our U2 flights.

The Soviets/Russians closed off West Berlin, located in East Germany, to land vehicles (cars, trucks and railroads) from West Germany. The Russians closed off West Berlin to try and show how strong and powerful they were. The USA response was to fly airplanes around the clock, non stop, into West Berlin and it was called the Berlin Airlift. It lasted for several months, a few planes crashed, due to accidents, (none were fired upon by the Communists), and some aircrews died or were badly injured. After seeing that the airlift made the land blockade a failure, the Soviets/Russians gave up and opened up West Berlin to land traffic.
