Can insurers deny life insurance coverage due to ulcerative colitis?

Life insurance companies can definitely deny coverage due to ulcerative colitis.

Ulcerative Colitis falls into the "impaired risk life insurance" category. It is critical that anyone with ulcerative colitis considering life insurance, work with an impaired risk life insurance expert.

Every life insurance company has its own set of underwriting guidelines. Some life insurance companies want nothing to do with you if you have ulcerative colitis, while there are a few companies available that understand ulcerative colitis and how to underwrite it and offer you life insurance.

What Do Underwriters Look For:

  1. Date and Age at time of diagnosis?
  2. How many flare-ups or episodes have you had in the past 6 months, 2 years, and 5 years?
  3. Have you been hospitalized for UC?
  4. Do you take medications for UC? If yes, what do you take and how much?
  5. If you have taken steroids, when did you last take steroids, dosage, and for how long?
  6. Have you had surgery for UC? Dates, details needed.
  7. Colonoscopy - Dates and results.

The right life insurance company will look at your UC and want to know if it is Mild, Moderate or Severe UC, and will make an underwriting determination based on your specific UC history.

How can ibuprofen affect Ulcerative Colitis?

There is ongoing debate over the use of NSAID drugs for Ulcerative colitis patients.

Standard advise has been to avoid their use.

NSAID's like Ibuprofen can and do irritate the lining of the stomach. The lining of the intestines is already inflamed by the disease and taking something known to irritate the stomach could exacerbate the symptoms.

This being said, patients still need pain relief for common day to day problems such as headache and muscle soreness etc, just like anyone else.

Consult your treatment team for suggestions.

What is a good birth control for young females with Ulcerative Colitis that won't have severe side effects and won't make my UC flare up?

Good question! I'm 19 with UC and I'm taking azathioprine. Most people have no trouble taking Sprintec for birth control. People have told me they have gotten UC problems from Yaz. Personally for me, the Sprintec was starting to give me UC symptoms again. I read that the estrogen is absorbed by your gut flora so I switched to Depo-Provera. In between the two types, I did great! Now that the Depo has kicked in, not so much. I think I'll have to go to a copper IUD. But really I would say go ahead and try something like Sprintec, pretty much everyone I talked to was fine on it =) If it begins to cause problems, go off it it
