The Columbus Dispatch ran a contest to name the team. They promised that the #1 winner would absolutely be the name of the team. Well, by a huge landslide, the "Columbus Cows" was the name chosen by the citizens of Columbus. But they refused to name the team the Cows, and the 2nd place name, "Blue Jackets," was chosen.

In an offensive rush in Calgary's deffensive zone, Espen Knutsen of the Jackets fired a shot that deflected off of the Flames' Derek Morris, and the puck flew out of play and struck 13 year-old Brittanie Cecil in the temple. They took her to a first aid station at the arena, then brought her to a local hospital in the area. She appeared to be recovering, but docters failed to discover a damaged tendon, causing swelling of the brain. She died nearly 48 hours after the game, two days before her 14th birthday. The tickets were an early birthday present from her father. As a result, the NHL required all arenas to put up the big nets around the ends of the rink you see today. For the remainder of the season, the Jackets wore her initials BNC on the backs of their helmets.
