Well, on a Mac, a file previewer is built into the OS. I believe version 10.5 or higher has this feature. Just press the spacebar and you can easily preview documents, photos, etc. without actually opening it. As for PCs, at this point there really is no way to preview something without opening it. If your problem is a virus concern, just scan it individually with antivirus software. If you don't have antivirus software, try the free Avira Antivir program, or there are many sites you can upload the file to for individual scanning. If your problem has nothing to do with virus worries, I probably need more details on the issue to help you out.

i have something to add. if it is a video game, put the whole system on a high up shelf, pick a long book, and don't get your game back until its finished. i was addicted to my sims, and i lost my dsi which had the game in it (ofcourse i eventually found it) and in like a week, i didnt care anymore.
