It depends. You can work on commission, rent a chair, or get an hourly wage. Commission is scary to start with, because you have to build a clientele, and that takes a good 2 years. Renting a chair is the same scariness until you have been established Hourly pay is very low, but can get you started and you will learn on customers more than you did in beauty school. (they don't realize this) After a few years of building your clientele, you can make a decent wage if you work hard, late, and stand up most of the day. The secret is you must stay put to build up loyal customer base. Depending on how much you work, earnings can vary from 15000 yr. to 50,000. A cosmetologist can also teach at a beauty school. The best way to start out is Commission, you only get paid on how much the salon makes, so there for if you do not have a clientele built up then that way is perfect to do it without getting an hourly wage or renting a booth. But also it depends on where you you work. like What state you work in, and what kind of salon you work in to. if you work in a high-end salon you should be making the big bucks. but if you are working in the low-end salons don't expects the big bucks but you also have to be really good!!!

There is no degree in cosmetology at the college level. You will find programs at numerous private beauty schools, and at your county vocational and technical school. Be careful of the private schools. They are on the expensive side, and you want to make sure it is not a fly-by-night school. Your best bet is to stick with the vocational school within your county, unless you have some really good recommendations about another school. Viper1

In the form of art you have to look at people as a canvas and recognize that the work you are doing on that person is art either in the form of makeup or a haircut.

You have to know art and colors when working with makeup in order to know color combinations and how to blend/shade.

As far as science it involves more of facial scrubs and chemical peels, you need to know the science behind this so you dont irritate or become to abbrasive to someones skin. When working with nails science helps you know what to use to dissolve the glue in acrylics, such as acetone whose chemical formula is C3H6O.

In Europe, It's common to have a male cutting hair, A little more common than females, In the united states and canada, there's more females than males. It's bests of both worlds, Be a hairdresser in a salon, or be a barber. Plus if you're considered a cute male, Female clients will want to be your client, And if you're good at what you do, they will want you even more. But regardless If you're good at it, it doesn't matter if it's for males or females.. Barbers have existed since biblical times, and females didn't have man rights or jobs etc. It's 50/50.. Doesn't matter. A male Barber is 100% common, A male Salon hairstylist makes up maybe 40% of the career (my bad estimate)

I have been in the Cosmetology field for over 25 years, and have worked all around the world. There are no international cosmetology licenses. Each country has it's own specific requirement concerning the field of cosmetology, and when we look at just the US alone, there is not even a national License. Each state has it's own different criteria that has to be met for a license. Then there are countries like where I am now that have no license for Cosmetologist.

My best suggestion is to figure out where you want to work in the industry, and contact that area's governing entity for Cosmetologist and see what the requirements are..
