Yes there are Cosplay groups in Sacramento at Evangeline's in Old Sac.

There are a lot of great characters you could cosplay. Personally I would recommend Zelda (Legend of Zelda) or Maka (Soul Eater.) As for male characters, Finny (black butler,) Link (Legend of Zelda,) or Finn the Human (Adventure time.)

if you like superheros you could do Batman, Nightwing, Robin, and Batgirl.

My recommendation is to have someone who knows what they are doing, do it for you.

Not at all! It is definitely fun to wear a costume to a cosplay convention, but it isn't required. There are a lot of people that go in their every day clothes just to appreciate other's cosplays, meet people with similar interests, and attend the panels.

For cosplay, you need to think of books or movies that you like. Think of something you've watched or read recently -- or something from long ago if you have a favorite from back then! Most people dress up as the most popular thing of the moment, but my favorite sorts of costumes are the ones where the people put a lot of work into them and obviously really liked the book or movie (or video game). You could also use Google to search for "cosplay ideas" or "most popular movies of 2012" or other ideas.
