When crabs are threatened and stressed to a certain point in the wild, in their natural habitat, they eject their claws and legs. The freezing conditions replicate an environment so stressful for the crab, it does the same under those circumstances.

Yes they can, hermit crabs are scavengers and in the wild will climb trees to eat bugs, dead fish on the shore, and fruits like mangos that have fallen off trees. in captivity hermit crabs can eat fruits, veggies, and sea food like shrimp

Hermit crabs as you might know are very social animals, in the wild they travel in "packs" with hundreds to them. They have very bad eyesight and use chirping noises to communicate with each other. When alone they might think that they are lost and become depressed. This can cause them to stop eating and die. Because hermit crabs are so cheap, you need at least 2-3 as I do.

Yes they do. With larger hermit crabs it is a lower louder noise and with smaller ones it is a higher pitched quieter noise. Usually they do it when they are mad or agitated. Sometimes they just do it for no reason. We have no idea how they make the noise ( just as a bonus fact )

Crab dip should not be kept unrefrigerated for more than four hours. It can last two to three days in the refrigerator.

It depends upon the size of the hermit crab. You can fit 5-7 small crabs in a 10 gallon tank but only 1 or 2 large crabs. The more room you leave for your crabs the happier and healthier they will be.

crabs, being widely an omnivorous scavenger, eat just about anything that falls to the sea floor. Some crabs are predators and hunt small fish, which would include herrings. Of course, there are some crabs which are herbivores, which would stay away from them.

I wouldn't suggest feeding pickled or preserved herring to pet crabs though, the chemicals used in the preservation would probably kill them.

Crabs are referred to in scientific literature as both walking and crawling. They are also described as creeping and are prone to scuttling in a sideways motion. Most crabs are however able to walk forward or backward as well as sideways.

If you see one on dry sand, wet sand it is going on, and then carefully, quickly, and gently scoop it up, and some sand around it. Drop it, and it won't ever let anyone pick him up again! He will rebury himself in the sand running backwards.Good luck!
