Knit into the next stitch and instead of pulling the old loop off, twist the new loop back on to the first needle just as you would when casting on originally. Do this twice then continue knitting as usual. You will have made a hole in the fabric.
What do the symbols on yarn wrappers mean?
They usually have to do with care instructions, like whether or not it's okay to iron the fabric, or machine wash/dry it. There is often something on the yarn as well for what weight the yarn is and what gauge and needle size it will be when knit/crocheted.

Why does your yarn have slack when you knit?
Try wrapping your yarn around your yarn finger once or twice, in order to establish a knitting tension -- the slack or lack of it -- that you want. (Your yarn finger is on the hand that holds the needles, while you knit actively with the needle in the other hand.)

Where can you get a knitting pattern for donkey hat?
Debbie Bliss's toy pattern book has a donkey, but I haven't been able to figure out the pattern. There's a Disney pattern for Eeyore that I got from a friend, and several small donkeys on-line, suitable for a creche but not really toy size. One is here: http://knitalittlemore.blogspot.com/2008/02/little-gray-donkey.html
If you want to help a charity raise money by knitting donkeys as well, here's a great idea...

Why knit with two circular needles in the round instead of just one?
Just as when you change needle sizes using straight needles to give the effect you want -- you can change needle sizes when working in the round, to give the effect you want.
Doubling up two needles at the same time would give you a looser knit and could prove cumbersome.
Is it possible to knit a beret with only knit stitch?
You'd probably need to know at least one kind of increase and decrease, but they could both be variations on the knit stitch (aka you don't need to know how to purl). It's also best to work hats in the round.
What does sl1 mean in knitting?
In knitting, sl1 means to slip one stitch. To do this simply slip the stitch from the left hand needle to the right without knitting it. Stitches can either be slipped purlwise or knitwise. If slipped purlwise, the stitch will not twist but if slipped knitwise it will twist. Therefore, if the pattern does not specify which way to slip the stitch, it is best to slip purlwise.
See the related link for a diagram showing how to slip stitches.

How many ounces are in a yard of yarn?
This depends on the yarn.
To give you a comparison, here are 3 different weight yarns (from Lion Brand web site). As you can see, even weight is not a firm determining factor in figuring the number of yards, although I would venture to say in most cases a lighter weight yarn will have more yards to the ounce.
