Curling

Curling is a team sport in which stones are slid across a sheet of ice towards a target area. Teams of four compete to accumulate the most points, scored by sliding granite stones across the length of the ice and positioning them closest to the center of a painted target (the "house"). The trajectory and speed of the stone's movement is influenced by teammates sweeping the ice surface ahead of the stone with curling brooms. Curling involves a great deal of strategy in terms of selecting the right types of shots to make in order to outmaneuver the opposing team. The sport has been an official part of the Winter Olympics since 1998.

What is the equipment called for curling?

"Curling shoes," one with a slippery Teflon slider built into the sole and the other with just grippy rubber on the bottom, are used to allow players to slide smoothly down the ice during their delivery (sliding) of the curling rock.

"Curling brooms" or "curling brushes" are used to "sweep" the ice in front of the rock, decreasing the friction between the rock and the ice and making the rock go both farther, and curl (curve) less if so desired. Brooms are also used by most players during their delivery for balance.

Many teams will use stop watches to time a rock between certain points on the ice, to get an idea of how fast the rock is moving.

What is they stick thing they use in curling?

Start at the root of your hair and the base of the curling stick wrap hair around stick till you reach the end hold for a few seconds and slip the stick off I find it easier and I like the curls more when I twist the section of hair I'm doing a little before and as I curl it around the stick. If you find your hair isn't curling try using smaller sections and add some product like hair spray before curling A word for the wise be very careful when using the curling stick it's really easy to burn yourself

How do you keep score in curling?

You score by having the closest stone to the center of the scoring area (the "house") at the end of each round ("end"). You score a point for every stone that is closer to the center than your opponent's closest. So, the maximum number of points you can score in one end is 8, if all of your rocks are inside or touching the house, and your opponent doesn't have any rocks closer than any of yours. A typical score is 1 to 3 points. 4 or more is considered a "big end."

How much money does a curling coach earn?

Technically, there are no professional curlers. Curlers all have other jobs. Revenue Canada considered taxing the winnings of curlers, but soon came to the conclusion that if curlers who participated in the same bonspiels and won little or nothing were to claim lodging, meals, and associated expenses as tax deductions, that the deductions would far exceed any revenue collected from those who made significant amounts.

How are points awarded in Olympic curling?

An Olympic curling game is separated into 10 rounds called "ends." An end is complete when all 16 stones (8 for each team) have come to rest. The score for that end is then taken. Whichever team is closest to the center of the house (the scoring area that looks like a target) scores. The amount of points they get is equal to the number of stones they have that are closer to the center than the opponent's closest. A couple of examples: if red has 3 stones in the house and yellow has none, then red scores 3. If red has 5 stones in the house--one of them being the closest--but yellow has a stone that is closer than 4 of the red stones, then red only scores 1.

What effect of the sweeping in curling?

The friction from sweeping heats the ice slightly and reduces the friction between the rock and the ice. This does two things; it makes the rock travel farther, and it also makes the rock travel straighter. When a rock is released, depending on the type of shot being thrown, the players will judge whether sweeping will help or hurt the trajectory of the rock, and decide whether the rock should be swept or not. Usually, the sweepers will pay attention to whether the rock might need sweeping to travel farther, while the skip pays attention to whether the rock might need sweeping to travel straighter, and they communicate this with each other while the rock travels down the ice.
