How do you cure depression?

There are many ways of helping to get rid of depression. However, the first thing you should do is see your doctor. They can give you a lot of information on the subject and are the people most able to help by referral to therapists, providing medication and generally assisting in treatment.

  • Some people just need to talk about it with a friend or trusted person, some need therapy.
  • Others may need medication to assist.
  • Some can get through it by finding things they like to do and doing them, keeping themselves too busy to worry, or avoiding the things they know make them depressed.
  • Music has often had a good effect on depressed people, and can help a lot.
  • Symptomatic treatment (fixing the results of depression, not the causes) can also help: most people with depression have bad sleep patterns or sleeping disorders. Fixing those will certainly help.
  • Several simple therapies and herbal treatments have been shown as a positive effect in treatment.

This however does not make them experts, psychologists, counsellors or anything else. They cannot diagnose any disease, suggest treatment or magic cures, or offer advise other than to see a professional. If they are concerned they might want to offer to pay for you to visit a trained medical professional of your choice to discuss the matter. Is it possible for a 12 year to be bipolar?

My nephew was unofficially diagnosed with bipolar at 4 yrs old. The official diagnosis was ADHD and a probable anxiety disorder. He's 15 now and indeed he is bipolar, type 1. He's been hospitalized many times. I think it is controversial diagnosing 'labeling' children so young and I don't know how they differentiate the two. A huge problem is the medications given to control the disorders. My nephew and son (also type 1 bipolar) cannot take ADHD medications. It sends them into mania - window breaking, can't blink mania. For them this fact was helpful in diagnosis.
