Is it possible for a 12 year to be bipolar?

My nephew was unofficially diagnosed with bipolar at 4 yrs old. The official diagnosis was ADHD and a probable anxiety disorder. He's 15 now and indeed he is bipolar, type 1. He's been hospitalized many times. I think it is controversial diagnosing 'labeling' children so young and I don't know how they differentiate the two. A huge problem is the medications given to control the disorders. My nephew and son (also type 1 bipolar) cannot take ADHD medications. It sends them into mania - window breaking, can't blink mania. For them this fact was helpful in diagnosis.

How do you get diagnosed with depression disorder?

According to the definitions of most medical, psychological, and psychiatric bodies, there is a commonality in the diagnosis of depression. Most depression tests have a very similar framework. Almost without exception, clinical depression will be diagnosed if a certain number of feelings, that are signs of depression, are present over a certain period of time.

Can bipolar disorder cause hallucinations?

Yes.

In severe cases of type 1 Bipolar, manias and mixed states (and even in rarer cases depressions) may be accompanied by psychotic features. Though delusions are the most common psychotic feature, hallucinations may be present.

Generally, gustatory and olfactory hallucinations (noticing non-existent tastes and smells) are most common, next comes auditory hallucinations (typically unstructured sounds are more common than voices, but voices occur as well) followed by visual hallucinations, tactile hallucinations (touch) seem to be rare.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have personally had auditory hallucinations (always voices with identifiable "unique personalities" and almost always originating from a direction above and to the right of me, probably more than 10 different voices) and olfactory hallucinations (always a burnt electric motor "smoke & ozone" smell), no visual or other hallucinations.

How can bipolar be misdiagnosed?

Yes I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder, then the meds they put me on didn't work so I did some research and found my symptoms were a match for a hormonal imbalance. I took this research to my doctor, and he ran tests, and I was right! It was a hormonal imbalance. I am currently being treated for this instead of bipolar. Its very easy for doctors to make this mistake, as the symptoms of each are very similar.

Can you get a gun if you have bipolar disorder?

This question really depends on the rules of ones state, and the requirements to own a firearm. I can really only speak to the state in which I live, which is Kentucky. The rules are usually similar, but every state is different.

Many states include involuntary commitment as a reason that one would be denied, but simply having a mental illness is not (nor should it be) a reason for prohibiting someone to buy or own a gun. Voluntary commitment to a mental institution is something done with the permission of the patient, and does not disqualify one from gun ownership. Involuntary commitment, however, involves the concerned party - family, doctors, therapist etc - standing before a judge to ask for a commitment order. If one is granted, it is treated the same as an arrest warrant, except the person in question is taken to a mental hospital instead of jail. One might assume that these types of individuals might be more dangerous - hence the firearms ban. But the power of involuntary is sometimes misused by family members or medical staff.

The mentally ill are already at a huge disadvantage because of social stigma, but there are many people who are responsible and proactive in their own treatment. Certainly they deserve the same level of protection afforded to any other law-abiding citizen.
