Doves and Pigeons

Pigeons are part of the Columbidae bird family, along with doves. The most common pigeon, found mostly in urban areas, is the Feral Rock Pigeon. The Passenger Pigeon was a bird that had lived in North America until it became extinct in 1914. This once-common species of animal was wiped out due to commercial hunting and habitat loss. Not only will foxes eat them, various animals consider them tasty at different stages of their development. Snakes will eat the eggs as will possums and raccoons. What is the life span of the passenger pigeon?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The passenger pigeon, Ectopistes Migratorious, once the most populous bird on earth, went extinct because of overhunting in the early 1900's. The bird had a life span of 7-12 years, sometimes slightly more.

(This would probably indicate the lifespan in the wild: Martha, the last passenger pigeon, live and died in captivity at the age of 29. This is similar to the Rock Pigeon [the common city pigeon], that lives about 3 years in the wild, yet 15 to 20 years as a pet.)

How do you make a pigeon trap?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

As a kid, I made a cheap and effective trap with a cardboard box, a piece of wood, a stick, 20 feet of string, and a small amount of grain.

Use a cardboard box that measures about 10" H x 12" W x 18" L. Cut a 6"x 6" access door in the box bottom. Fasten a weight at one end of the box. A piece of 2x3 or 2x4 works well. Tie the 20'-long string to a 10-12" stick, and use the stick to prop the weighted end of the inverted box.

For a couple of days, before putting the box in place, put some grain both outside and under the intended location of the box, where the pigeon can see it. Stay nearby so that the pigeon becomes accustomed to you while it's eating. After a few days, put the box and stick in place, and move 20 feet away

with the string in hand.

Wait for the bird to move to the grain under the box and pull the string, so that the box falls over the bird. Reach through the access door to retrieve it.
