Most people recognize Poe by his famous poem, "The Raven". Others may have read one of his more popular dark and creepy tales like, "The Fall of the House of Usher" or "The Tell-tale Heart". Poe wrote quite a few gothic stories about murder, revenge, torture, the plague, being buried alive, and insanity. Many modern books and movies have "borrowed" ideas from Poe. Some of Poe's stories were not well accepted in his day because people were just not ready for them- they were too scary.

The narrator initially rejected the idea of burying the body in the cellar, considering it too risky due to the possibility of the body being discovered. The setting in the purloined letter is important since it puts emphasis on how easy it was to find the missing letter. As you might as well read the short story, the letter was found on a card rack in plain site. Having the setting in the house makes us the readers assume that it wont be there since thats where it went missing in the first place. It makes it have a great ending and surprises the reader. Well, to began don't take this as a fact!I am only in 8th grade and this is my opinion.
It seems to me that the demon is talking to the ghost/soul of the man on the rock. They are reviewing his life. The demon hides from him when the man is alive, but in contrast has no need to hide from him in his passed state, and seems actually to be acting as a guide/historian in all the things that have passed since the death of the man. The ghost of the man seems to be not at rest, having lived a difficult and conflicted life his spirit does not seemed to have found rest and the demon seems to find humor in the inescapability of the human condition as well as the entirety of the cosmos.
The point of the story seems to come down to the belief that life is short and brutal, but it is LIFE and still preferable to death which is silence that is overwhelming, death is oblivion. The universe consists of nothing more then temporary islands/moments/seconds of stability (life/matter) being in temporary states of cohesion before ceasing and reverting back to silence and cosmic and Normal state which is chaos.
The lynx seems to be chaos, simply knowing, waiting, for the cosmic status qou to return.

Edgar Allan Poe's past relationships influenced most of his writing. Most of them died, Virginia. Depression, and heartache fueled most of his writing which is quite understandable seing as all the women he loved passed, starting with his mother. Poems like Anabelle Lee, To my Mother, and The Lake. To--, all consist of memories from his past loves.

No one knows this with any degree of reliability. It is known that Poe was not treated by his personal physician for any diabetic condition during his lifetime. The idea that Poe had diabetes arose as one possible theory of his death (among many others). The idea arose simply by a review of his symptoms and condition at the time of his death and not of any symptoms or conditions during his life other than the fact that he did not tolerate alcohol very well.
