Edward Teach, more commonly known as Blackbeard, was born around 1680 in Bristol. He began his saling life aboard a British ship in the Caribbean during war; when Britain withdrew, he turned to piracy. He joined the crew of one Benjamin Hornigold, who was overthrown by crew who later elected Blackbeard captain. In battle, Teach often wore multiple fuses and burning material in his hair and beard, and was armed was many pistols, knives and swords; he is reputed to have filled a hold with brimstone and lighting it in an effort to "make [their] own hell for the crew" before joining them in it; there is a legend that he forced his fourteenth wife, a teenager, to be gangraped by several crewmembers - there is no evidence that this is true, nor that he had more than the one wife. However, despite his appearance and fearsome reputation he is not known to have killed anyone and was actually quite considerate of his hostages and prisoners compared to some pirates of the time. He is most famous for the blockade of Charleston SC, USA. With his flagship the Queen Anne's Revenge and three smaller ships he plundered some merchant ships in the harbour; no other ships could enter or leave the harbour without risking capture. Among those on the captured vessels were a group of prominent citizens of the town, who were held for the ransom of (strangely for a pirate) a chest of medicines. the deputation sent to collect the ransom took time to party in town and Teach almost killed the hostages, but received the ransom and released the unclothed but unharmed prisoners. The small squadron then escaped. He soon after ran most of his command aground (whether deliberately or not is debated), salvaged the treasure from those ships, marooned much of the crew and sailed on to Bath NC, USA to enjoy himself. Here he accepted a pardon under the Royal Act of Grace and left to Ocracroke Inlet, probably to retire. The nearby Governor of Virginia was concerned that such a notorious pirate was so close, and sent a Lieutenant Maynard with two small sloops and 55 men (larger ships would not have been useful in the shallow coastal waters). He discovered Teach in an inlet of Ocracroke Island on the night of November 21 1718, and decided to wait until morning. Teach made a break and was chased before the two pursuers ran aground; the two captains had a shouting match, although the exact words are disputed. The sloops managed to free themselves and rowed towards Teach's vessel (which couldn't move away for lack of wind). Midshipman Hyde, captain of the sloop Jane, and 6 other men were killed with 10 injured - leaving a fighting crew of only 9. The ship was then no help in the following battle. The other sloop, the Ranger, was able to damage the Adventurer's (Teach's ship) rigging and drive it ashore. Maynard ordered most of the 30-strong crew into the holds; Teach saw almost empty decks and boarded with only 10 men of his own, leading with home-made smoke grenades which obscured the Ranger crew's vision of the attacking force. the rest of Maynard's crew emerged and the battle was begun. Accounts differ, but Teach was killed reportedly with 5 pistol shots and 20 stab wounds, before being decapitated and his head hung from the bowsprit (as a trophy and a necessary condition for the crew to collect their reward). ---- Further details and expanded accounts, as well as other information can be found at the related links.
Blackbeard has been dead for about three centuries, so we can't just ask him.
He's known to have had multiple wives/mistresses. As to what he got up to on the High Seas ... who knows. He certainly didn't have any women on board his ship, but then again, he wasn't on a years-long voyage of discovery or a regimented military mission, he was out hunting for ships to plunder, and there's no real reason he couldn't have put into any nearby port pretty much any time he felt like a little companionship.
What crimes did Blackbeard commit?
Blackbeard had been reaking havoc in the Caribbean and along the coast of the American colonies for couple years, but certain recent events and large raids commited by Blackbeard and his crew cause Governor Spotswood of Virginia to put his foot down and take serious action. Spotswood knew that Blackbeard was nearby and sent naval Lieutenant Robert Maynard after him. Maynard's crew caught up with Blackbeard and engaged them in a bloody battle. Blackbeard put up fight and might have won had he not been hung over or even still drunk from some piratical partying the night before. After no less than 20 stab and gun shot wounds, he fell dead on board of Maynard's ship. The members of Blackbeard's crew who survived the battle were brought back to land and tried for piracy. Most of them were found guilty and hanged for their crimes.
Who were the parents of Blackbeard?
Nothing is really known about Blackbeard's early life, other than he was born Edward Teach (and some say it was actually "Thatch"), in Bristol, England.
it was a medical necessity, he lost his leg to diabetes
What was Blackbeard last words?
In the second movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Jack Sparrow was left facing the Kracken to his death. Despite the words 'Not bad' about the Kracken's slime that was spewed on him, he had only two final words.
"Hello, beastie."
Who is BlackBeard's daughter name?
My brother met a fellow in Greenville NC who claimed to be descended from Blackbeard. As he did not mention the name "Teach" ,"Tach", "Thatch", or any other similar appellation, the descent through a daughter would be probable.
What events caused blackbeard to become a pirate?
Edward Teach or as he was later to be called "Black Beard" In 1716, he joined the crew of Captain Benjamin Hornigold, a renowned pirate who operated from New Providence's safe waters. In 1716 Hornigold placed Teach in charge of a sloop he had taken as a prize. As a former British privateer, Hornigold attacked only his old enemies, but for his crew, the sight of British vessels filled with valuable cargo passing by unharmed became too much, and at some point toward the end of 1717 he was demoted. Whether Teach had any involvement in this decision is unknown, but Hornigold quickly retired from piracy. He took Ranger and one of the sloops, leaving Teach with Revenge and the remaining sloop. It appears the two never met again, and with many other occupants of New Providence, Hornigold accepted the King's pardon from Woodes Rogers in June the following year.
Like many pirates of the 17th and 18th century, Blackbeard (Edward Teach, 1680-1718) was drawn to the lucrative opportunities of raiding commercial shipping in the Americas and the Caribbean.
During the Queen Anne's War from 1702-1713, many sailors were hired to be privateers, which were basically pirates paid to attack enemy merchant ships during wartime, used as a type of economic warfare. The privateers were paid to be "legal" pirates working with the navy, pillaging enemy cargo ships.
After the war, all these privateers were left without jobs, and turned to the one job that they knew how to do well: pirating. Only instead of working for a set wage, they got to keep whatever they took. Blackbeard was one of these privateer-turned-buccaneers. Blackbeard went to Nissan, in the Bahamas, which was at that time a center for pirates. There he joined the ranks of Benjamin Hornigold, and started his career as a pirate.
Later, he conducted raids along the coasts of the Carolinas, which proved to be his undoing. In November, 1818, a small fleet hired by the Governor of Virginia caught up with Teach and engaged his ship. In the ensuing hand-to-hand battle, he was killed. The lead ship returned to Virginia with the head of Blackbeard tied to its bowsprit.
Edward Teach aka 'Blackbeard' ship was known as the 'Queen Anne's Revenge'.
It was a 300 ton British man-of-war that was named 'Concord' before being captured by the French, who renamed it ' La Concorde de Nantes'.

How did Blackbeard get his name?
There were a number of things which made blackbeard famous. His life as a pirate was relatively short, lasting only 2 years, however he left a lasting impression on the world.
He was an incredibly tall man for the time, standing well over 6 feet when the average height was somewhere around 5' 4" - 5' 8". He was also incredibly smart, his standard method of attacking his victims revolved around intimidation and scare tactics. It's rumoured that until his final battle, Blackbeard had never killed a single man. He wore lit fuses under his hat, and weaved into his beard to create the illusion that he was on fire which perpetuated rumours that he was the devil. Word quickly spread that if you encountered him, he would let you live so long as you gave in without a fight.
Another major contributing factor is that Blackbeard captained quite a large ship for a pirate. Pirate ships were often small sloops designed to get in and out of shallow areas where their pursuers which often captained navy ships with a much larger draft couldn't follow. Blackbeards most famous ship, The Queen Anne's Revenge, was a 200 - 300 ton ship outfitted with over 20 cannons. This was the ship he used to blockade the entire port of Charleston in South Carolina, sacking any ship that tried to leave and ransoming the nobility for food, medicine, and anything of value.
During his final battle it is rumoured that it took over 20 stab wounds, and 3 gunshot wounds to finally bring him down. Reports from that day claimed that after blackbeards head was severed, his decapitated body jumped overboard and swam three laps around the ship before dying. That is quite obviously a myth.
Blackbeard's parrot's name was Pepe in the legends of Blackbeard. Blackbeard's real name was Edward Teach and he was a real historical figure.
He died in 1718 when he was hung by the British navy on his own ship
