Who were the original members of the Elton John band?
Membership Lead guitarist Jerry Garcia was often seen both by the public and the media as the leader or primary spokesperson for the Grateful Dead, but was reluctant to be perceived that way, especially since he and the other group members saw themselves as equal participants and contributors to their collective musical and creative output.[8][9] Garcia, a native of San Francisco, grew up in the Excelsior District. One of his main influences was bluegrass music, and Garcia also performed-on banjo, one of his other great instrumental loves, along with the pedal steel guitar-in the bluegrass band Old and in the Way with mandolinist David Grisman. Classically trained trumpeter Phil Lesh played bass guitar. Bob Weir, the youngest original member of the group, played rhythm guitar. Ron "Pigpen" McKernan played keyboards and harmonica and was also a group vocalist until shortly before his death in 1973 at the age of 27. All of the previously mentioned Grateful Dead members shared in vocal performance of songs. Bill Kreutzmann played drums, and in 1967 was joined by a second drummer, New York native Mickey Hart, who also played a wide variety of other percussion instruments. Hart quit the Grateful Dead in 1971, embarrassed by the financial misdealings of his father, Dead money manager Lenny Hart, and leaving Kreutzmann once again as the sole percussionist. Mickey Hart rejoined the Dead for good in 1975. Tom "TC" Constanten was added as a second keyboardist from 1968 to 1970, while Pigpen also played various percussion instruments and sang.

'Candle In The Wind' was a tribute to the late Marilyn Monroe, whose real name was Norma Jean Baker. It was a condemnation of the way she was treated by the film industry and the media, who he felt exploited her and forced her to continue with a lifestyle she was unhappy with, which led to her suicide in 1962.
A re-released version of the song, with altered lyrics, came out in September 1997 as a tribute to Princess Diana following her death in a car crash in Paris. Elton was a close friend of Diana's, and he sang it at her funeral.

What hardships did Elton John overcome?
He has had many problems during his career. His first problem, he believed, was his name, because it really wasn't a rock star name, so he changed it from Reginal Kenneth Dwight to Elton (Hercules) John. When he revealed he was bisexual, his audience shrunk back in size. During the late 70's and for all of the 80's, he was abusing drugs and alcohol so heavily that it was amazing that he made it out alive. He got into fights with his original lyricist Bernie Taupin, and worked with other lyricists starting in 1979, with not the best results, until his reunition with Bernie in 1983 for the album Too Low For Zero. After that, his marriage to Renate Blauel created much controversy and then had the media constantly attacking him. They divorced in 1998. Not to mention, he needed two hair replacement surguries because his hair was thinning off. He finally checked into rehabilitation for his substance abuse in 1990. His songwriting hasn't been the strongest and until 2001's Songs From The West Coast, hasn't had a wholly consistently high-quality album since Blue Moves, in 1977. From the early 90's until now, he's been also a strong-mouthed controvertialist. Most infamously, he has a bad temper that has been only under control for a few years.
