What does radical feminist mean?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Radical Feminism is the belief that women's oppression is caused by the patriarchy, which is a system of male authority that is especially manifested in sexuality, personal relationships, and the family, but that spills over into the rest of the male-dominated world.

Radical Feminism holds that "the personal is political," and does not want women to be treated the same as men, but for their differences to be acknowledged, and at the same time, both equally valued. Radical feminism calls for revolution instead of reform, and wants to dismantle repressive institutions, instead of re-working them in an attempt to fix them.

Radical feminism has been criticized as excluding other identities, and focusing only on women - asking black women to value their identity as a woman more than their identity as a person of color, for instance. Radical feminism also sometimes falls into transphobia, saying that transgendered women aren't really women.

What changes occurred because of the second wave feminism?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The changes that the second wave of feminism brought about were the eighteenth and nineteenth amendments. The eighteenth amendment was for prohibition and the nineteenth gave women the right to vote. Thought the nineteenth amendment still stands today, the eighteenth was later repealed.

Note: Many people regard the second wave of feminism as the time period that came just after WWII, however that is actually not the case. The first wave of feminism was actually at the time of slavery when women helped in the emancipation cause. This is not widely regarded because it was not focused on women's rights. However, feminists knew that in order for women to gain the right to vote and right to own property, male slaves would need that right first. And they also knew they would gain the popularity and support of the slaves once emancipated.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of the feminism approach?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Broadly speaking, the concerns of women must be balanced against the concerns of men. Women have every right to seek and demand social equality with men, but if they want superiority to men, then there will be problems.

What year did feminism start?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This question is badly conceived. It assumes that feminism is something which can be encapsulated into one particular movement or ideology. There are many kinds of feminism, each quite different from the other. It would be more productive to ask when a particular kind of feminism began. Agreed. There was no proclamation saying anything like, 'We, the undersigned, hereby launch a campaign for the equality of men and women [date]'. There were several different campaigns on specific issues - such as the provision of serious, worthwhile education, the vote, property rights and so on. In general terms, these various campaigns started in the nineteenth century (1800s) in both Europe and America.

What dos the quote 'Feminism is doomed to failure because it is based on an attempt to repeal and restructure human nature' mean?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This implies that it's human nature to have imbalance in power between different groups of people. Feminism seems to bring about equality between the genders, as well as equality in other areas of society such as between different races. This quote is arguing that can't happen because it's human nature for humans to seek power over others different to themselves.

How are gender roles changing?

More men are staying home to do housework and raise children. Which in my opinion is unhealthy. Men need a sense of accomplishment, which housework and children don't give to them. Not to mention, the tension between man and wife is heightened when the man stays at home. A working woman will have less interest in her man after a long days work. Men generally need their wives to be romantically interested in them, or they start to feel less like a man. Along with several other stress factors. Women, in general, are more patient with children, and have a greater interest in making a house into a home. Therefore, stressful situations, outside of home life, make a harder impact on women. Men on the other hand are generally less patient with children, and don't really care about what the house looks like, as long as there is a roof over their family's head. On the flip side, men are better suited to handle stress at work, as it doesn't effect them emotionally. My wife has told me numerous times that she would love to quit her job and stay home with the kids.

Some people believe that feminists are man-haters who want to destroy the fabric of society. Others argue that feminism has achieved very little and that women are still viewed as second-class citizens, and that unofficial inequalities (e.g. the 'glass ceiling') still exist unchallenged.

What is the feminist criticism in Cinderella?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A lot of people note that the Disney version of Cinderella, at least, is unfeminist because Cinderella is a passive entity in the execution of her own fate. Take away the mice and fairy godmother, and you'll notice that Cinderella does just about nothing to improve her situation, and executes exactly none of the critical actions of the film. She wishes for something, and others give it to her.

For example, lets take a look at those critical turning points in the film. You'll notice that the mice design her dress for her. Her godmother gives her a carriage and a new dress when her sisters destroy the first. The mice let her out of her room when her stepmother locks her away, and the prince whisks her away from her place of servitude. Cinderella herself, meanwhile, does little more than lament her situation and wish for someone to rescue her.

Princesses from the Disney canon that are seen as more feminist (though interpretations vary on just how feminist they really are) are those that exercise agency. In Beauty and the Beast, for instance, Belle's life is shaped by her own decisions--to take her father's place in the beast's castle, to go where she is forbidden to go, to leave the beast's castle and to return as she sees fit. Jasmine is another example: though Aladdin is ultimately the one who saves the day, the difference is that Jasmine executes many critical actions on her own.

One last, even more modern example is Disney's version of Rapunzel. Contrast the actions of Cinderella with those in the Rapunzel clip linked below, and see which appears to be more feminist.
