Ferns

Ferns are plants that have stems, leaves, and roots like other vascular plants, but they do not produce flowers and seeds. Ferns reproduce by means of spores. Before the emergence of flowering plants, ferns dominated the land for millions of years. Nowadays, they are mostly valued for their attractive foliage.

What animals eat ferns?

Most animals avoid ferns because the mature fronds are poisonous. Humans and most farm animals like cattle, horses, pigs, etc. will get sick if they eat mature fern fronds. White-tailed deer, rabbits, and European wood mice are a few animals that can eat ferns. They usually eat the soft new shoots (called "fiddleheads") that aren't poisonous yet. Humans also eat fern fiddleheads in some parts of the world, usually after cooking them.

Can Boston fern fronds be trimmed when plant gets too large?

Ferns

I trim mine by cutting the longer ones I don't want out.
I do this by following the frond down to the base and cutting it there.
I don't pull it out so new ones come up from the base. Messy so do somewhere that doesn't matter.

What is a red fern plant?

Actually, while there is no such known plant on Earth, the Lady Fern (Athyrium filix-femina) does have a rare variant (native to the Ozarks) with reddish fronds (probably a genetic mutation). It appears likely that this is the plant that is referred to. According to ancient Native American legend, only an Angel can plant a Red Fern (ordinary human beings can't); and wherever it grows, the entire place is sacred. But there is no Red Fern known in the scientific community per se.

Oh, by the way: the four-leaf clover (the clover having four leaves, rather than the usual three) is caused by a mutation, or altered gene; perhaps it is the same here as well.

What is the habitat of a fern?

Ferns are generally found in shaded and sheltered environments although some are adapted to slightly more harsher conditions.

A large part of the ferns reproductive cycle involves damp, moist (even wet) conditions, hence the tendency for them to be found in these places.

Ferns are fairly well adapted and can grow in soil, tree trunks and even in the canopies of trees; they normally thrive in semi-shade and high humidity.
