Firearms

Values are based on the actual condition of the firearm and whether any modifications have been done to it, such as re-bluing or drilling and tapping for scope mounts, etc. Condition depends on how much of the original finish (stock and metal) is remaining and if there are any dings, dents, scratches, etc on it. It's really best to take the firearm to someone local or to a gun show for an estimate of worth.

What gun manufacturer made the Simmons Hardware co KeenKutter guns What years were these made Did they make a 20 gauge How many 20's were made?

Simmons Hardware was a large chain. In the early 1900s, many companies sold what were known as "Hardware guns" or "store brand guns". One manufacturer, Crescent, made over 2 million shotguns under more than 400 different store names. If you owned Fred's hardware store, if you ordered 12 shotguns, Crescent would make them, and they would be stamped Fred's Hardware. Such was the case with Simmons (they bought a lot more than 12) Unfortunately, there are limited records, since shotguns were not regulated as they are today. 12 g shotguns were most common, 20 g less common.

Where is the serial number on 12 gauge American gun?

It may not have one. Assuming yours is a break-action shotgun, they were made by Crescent. Crescent made over 2 million shotguns under about 425 different trade names (American was the name used for guns made for Sears). Shotguns were not required by law to HAVE a serial number until 1968, and your gun was made well before the, HOWEVER- if there is a serial number, it is likely found on the portion of the frame that is covered by the breech end of the barrels. Remove the barrels, and look at the part of the frame that they concealed.

Where can you purchase an affordable riflemans rifle?

If you mean the rifle used in the TV series The Rifleman, that was a modified Winchester Model 1892- which is a rather pricy collector's rifle. However, the Spanish made El Tigre was used in the show as well (when rifle was to be dropped or thrown) and is less expensive. Start by checking with a well connected gun shop.

What is the best handgun for a woman?

One of the best handguns for a woman would be the Ruger.

Answer:

You've entered an area where opinions are likely to vary widely.

How you intend to use the handgun is the most important factor in deciding what size and weight handgun you should get. If it is not to be carried but kept in a nightstand or glove compartment I would recommend a larger frame revolver similar to the Smith & Wesson Model model 64 or model 10 (used or new once they are available again) in a 4" barrel.

If you carry it with you and you carry a large purse consider one similar to the Smith & Wesson Model 642.

If you carry a small purse consider a North American Arms model NAA-22LR (short barrel 22 long rifle). Or if you can stand a little more size and weight the North American Arms Black Widow. But, these guns will require more practice to use.

All of the above guns are revolvers. Most people what automatics because they are jazzier looking. That's why you see them on CSI and other TV crime shows. But, revolvers are more reliable (they're almost certain to shoot when you pull the trigger) and easier to learn to use and handle safely than automatics.

I say similar to Smith & Wesson above because I'm not touting that brand, just the type of handgun. Colt, Ruger and Taurus sell good revolvers.

Some generalizations.

  • The heavier the gun the gentler the recoil but the more weight to carry. The greater the recoil the harder it is to shoot without flinching. You must try to get comfortable with the recoil. Some people will try to get you to shoot .357. Don't! At least until you've had experience with 38 special and lower calibers.
  • The longer the barrel the easier it is to hit your target and the more punch the hit will have. But, the harder it is to carry.

Is a model 700 classic 257 Roberts a long action?

Probably. The .257 Bob has a case length of 2.233, longer than the .308 Winchester (2.015). However, on a Model 700, measure distance between the receiver screws. If it is 6.5 inches, THAT rifle is a short action. 7.35 inches, long action.

Where is the primer located on a rifle cartridge?

It is located on the rear of the cartridge. If it is a rimfire, such as .22 Long Rifle, it is in the folded rim of the cartridge. Larger cartridges, such as the 30-30, are centerfire, and the primer is located at the rear center of the cartridge.

Janssen & Fils, Leige, Belgium, c 1890-1915. Several million similar utility shotguns were imported US in this time period, few of any collector interest. It probably has large side hammers that are attractive to decorators and damascus or twist barrels that are probably no longer safe for use. SHOULD NOT BE FIRED WITH MODERN AMMO.
