Do you install tile or hardwood first?

I have done this and I always have the hardwood installed first. Then I install the ceramic tile. To protect the hardwood floor from getting grout or glue on it I cover the hardwood floor with a soft cover (to prevent scratches) and tape it down. Then place a plastic cover over the hardwood. Then I can install the ceramic tile at the edge of the hardwood creating hardly or no seem and level with the hardwood. When its done it looks beautiful.

I would install the tile first , that way you don't risk getting glue or grout on your hardwood.

What is the process to put laminate over old wood floors that have minor damage and gaps?

Laminate is made to be easy to install & forgiving of bad subfloors. IT WAS DESIGNED FOR GAPS & OUCHIES!!

the simple answer is follow the instructions, the install won't be different, the floor prep evaluation will be the challenge. Let me make it simple.

If the floor is solid, doesn't bounce or shake, you are half way home.. It must be solid or you must make it solid. Screws not nails!!

The next criteria is smooth / level if you pull a chalk line tight & it is within the thickness of 2 nickles to the floor at all points you are OK to proceed

The next is gaps. Please remember that the "Laminate Pad" that most dealers sell will cover & mitigate most small nicks & gaps, reduce air movement & improve insulation; serious gappage must be taken care of.

if the gaps are less than 1/4 inch you will be fine specially if you run the boards lengthwise at 90 degrees to the original boards...

Follow the makers instructions & check Youtube for a bunch of free how to vids & you will be styling on a new laminate floor in no time. Don't forget to get the trim & transitions before you start the job, it will save you huge time. remember it is a floating floor and that means no nails, no glue & never never never let the edge touch anything it must have a gap all the way around the edge or it will buckle.

What is the going rate to install ceramic tile?

The going rate might not matter if the job is not an excellent job.

What you want is a trades person skilled enough to install ceramic tile, who guarantees the work, and who can work within your residence under bond, insurance and license. As well, this person's references must be solid, or whatever you pay this person won't be worth anything.

Finally, any labour rate will be regional and situational.

What is the average labor cost for porcelain tile installation?

In southeastern PA, the cost of installing porcelain tile should begin around $4.00 per square foot. This price represents a basic installation of simple 12 X 12 tile over a smooth, flat concrete surface. Upgrades would include a large format tile (larger than 12 X 12), a patterned installation, or any special considerations such as expansion joints and transitions. If the tile is being installed over a plywood sub-floor, an approved cement or fiber-cement based subfloor must be installed prior to the installation of the tile. This labor charge usually runs about $2.00 per square foot (materials are additional). Grout installation is included in the tile installation labor charge. Installation of tile on walls in showers and kitchens is usually higher and usually requires a site visit prior to pricing.

Is a rug pad necessary for a large rug?

A rug pad is not mandatory. However, if placing a large rug on wood or tile floors, the pad will protect the floor underneath from spills and dirt being ground in. It will also protect the underside of the rug from wearing out. Additionally, it will cushion the rug, and keep it in place. If you are placing a large rug on a carpet, no rug pad is necessary.

Can you lay ceramic tiles on a wood floor if so what adhesive do we use?

Yes you can, but there are requirements & considerations.

The sub floor must be solid, If you walk through the room & the dishes in the cupboard rattle, the floor is not solid enough...

Total thickness should be at least 1 1/4 inches & solid!!!

you also have to keep in mind how heavy Tile & thin-set are. a good size kitchen floor adds over a TON to your floor & the load the walls & foundation has to carry...

If that floor is flexing, the tile is moving & well break, crack & crack the grout out...

the wood should be clean & free of finishes & wax, a little roughness/ texture is even a good thing.

The thin-set is mortar mixed with water and while the wood will soak up the water it will soon evaporate off & should not cause buckling.. lay out the floor with a chalk line & square from the center & work outward a few feet at a time and that keeps the humidity down too.

Don't use adhesives on Ceramic tile, it is not as permanent as the tile & will not provide the "bed" to set the tile into...

What is the average price per square foot for ceramic tile installation in NH?

It varies from contractor to contractor. Size and type of tile. Design. Cuttings, edges, corners, doors, closets, islands, etc. Location. It is best to get a bid (at least 3-4). Make sure your bids have references and pictures. Remember you get what you pay for. The lowest bid may not be the good and may have hidden costs and sloppy work. A quality tiler is worth the price you pay and you are pleased with the work.

I have bid on many tile jobs and I wasn't the low bidder, but I was honest and thorough in what needed to be done and how much it would cost. I got the job and the homeowner was very pleased with the work
