Can you lay tile over flake board?

Yes, you can but you need to staple a mesh to it. Then fill the mesh with thin-set and let it dry before putting your tile down with thin-set.

Do you need underlay to fit a vinyl floor?

no and it would probably be a bad idea as it is likely to move around. Vinyl is cushioned anyway so there would be no point. Underlay is put under carpet to stop the carpet being crushed. Vinyl will restore after being walked on.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Answer 2:

Underlayment is used on vinyl when installed over a wood substrate. Vinyl will take the shape of the floor below requiring a smooth surface for installation. Without this board, often a floor will telegraph the imperfections below. Additionally the underlayment should have the nail holes and seams between boards patched with a wood filler.

Is it more is it more cost effective to have carpet or hardwood floors?

As usual this would depend on many factors. Size of the room? What are you putting it over? Is the subfloor perfectly level and smooth? - If not, what is the cost of prep for the new flooring? Carpet covers many flaws that a tile or wood floor won't.

From a purely green perspective a natural wood floor is the most cost effective. Trees are planted for use in manufacturing of the materials not like carpet which is almost 100 percent synthetic (or wool which is very expensive or silk which is beyond the reach of most people). Cleaning wood only requires a microfiber mop and a little soap and water where carpet requires an expensive vacuum and electricity to maintain as well as chemicals or steam to clean periodically over its life.

The average life of carpet is 10 -- 15 years and must always be replaced -- a natural wood floor can last the life of the house and can be repaired or resurfaced.

So, the answer to your question is: If you are living in a home that you do not plan to be in for more than 10 years -- buy less expensive carpet and let the new owners can decide on a new color if they want to. If you are living in what will be the family home for many years and be passed on for future generations -- go natural. The initial cost of wood is not that much more than that of a really good carpet but will last so much longer.

Why do bare feet feel cooler on a tile floor than in a wooden floor?

GREAT physics experiment!

Wood is an insulator in part because it is less dense, so once your foot feels the cool, it is being insulated from losing more heat.

The Tile is dense and acts as a "HEAT SINK" it literally draws the heat out of the foot and stores it in the tile.

Is luxury vinyl tile better in a kitchen than laminate?

I think that luxury vinyl tile or plank is a great option for a kitchen. First, it is waterproof (laminate is not and with water it can be permanently damaged. Second, luxury vinyl is usually glued down to the floor, so it is more secure and feels/sounds more real vs. a laminate floor which is floating and sounds tinny/hollow underneath. Third, if you floor is uneven/not level, the luxury vinyl will work better as it is a flexible material and can tolerate indiscrepancies; a laminate floor will move a lot of if the floor is uneven (and could even buckle and break if it's too uneven.

Please note that you will still need to make sure you floor is smoothed out before putting luxury vinyl on top, as the the vinyl will telegraph the shape of what is underneath it.

Can you use used coffee grounds to fill in minor scratches in laminate flooring?

I wouldn't. How are you supposed to keep the grounds in the scratch indentations? Contact the mfg. of the flooring or go to a home improvement store to see if there is a product that will "color" the scratched area so it matches the rest of the floor. The problem with laminates is that the actual laminated surface is very thin and if you scratch through it into the backing material, any moisture on the floor will seep into the backing causing it to swell and warp. Also, laminates are not designed to be "refinished".

Can you use wall tile grout on floor tiles?
