How do meat eaters depend on plants for food?

  • plants are the main sourceof energy entering the food chain

Their prey live on plants , for the most part, and skinny prey is not good for carnivores.

What do consumers do in the food chain?

In the the food chain, the secondary consumer eats the primary consumer and the tertiary consumer eats the secondaryconsumer.

What is the Food Web for Hawaii?

Hawaiiâ??s diverse animal population is connected by a food web that spans multiple groups from microscopic organisms to human beings.

What is the lion's food chain?

Anything he want it to be..
The lion is on top of the food chain. It is an apex predator and preys on all mammals and herbivores that live in the forest. Male Elephants have been known to kill Lions when in Musth but apart from this, Lions have no natural enemies that can kill them. The prey species for lions include buffalo, zebra, gazelle, giraffe and even an occasional hippo or an elephant calf
Sunlight > grass > grazing animal such as gazelle > lions.

Food chains end with?

The end of a food chain is known as the apex predator. It eats something lower on the chain, but there is nothing that preys upon it. Polar bears, for example, are apex predators. The human race is a special case; we are effectively above all food chains, by reason of our technological advantage. There is no species on Earth that we cannot kill.

A picture of a food web in the desert?

A desert food web can be very complex, as with any ecosystem, everything relies on anything else.

A simple food web could look something like this:

Cactus ---> Rodent ---> Snake ---> Raptor

Some more complex desert food web examples can be found by following the links below.

How do you calculate hotel labor percentage?

To calculate hotel labor percentage, first add up total costs of doing the business. Then divide the cost of labor by the total cost of doing business to get the percentage of hotel labor cost.

How are food chains food webs and food pyramids similar?

They show mainly the same info: how energy flows through predation. Food chains show a specific path in which energy flows, food webs show many different variations of paths, with many different species involved, while food pyramids show the same thing as a food chain, but in a pyramid box.

Why are there so few predators compared to the prey animals they hunt?

Balance within the food webPredators are normally bigger so they need more food. Each predator has to kill many prey animals a year to survive and the prey animals have to be numerous enough to reproduce and survive. Too few prey animals and the predators starve to death. In a healthy ecosystem predators and prey reach a balance so that there are always enough prey animals to continue reproducing. This ensures a permanent supply of food for the predators. If the predators over hunt the prey animal, the population of prey will decline causing the predators to starve. The ecosystem will not also be balanced if there are more predators than preys.

In the food web the producers are always more numerous than the primary consumers who are more numerous than the secondary consumers. It is rare to find tertiary consumers. This is because the amount of energy transfered between the trophic levels decreases meaning that an organism in a higher trophic level has to eat more animals in the level below in order to gain enough energy. The reason for this is that energy is lost from the system due to movement, excretion, reproduction etc.

re: you're smart.

on each trophic level there is a certain number of kilacalories. say the primary consumer has 3500 kilacalories then the secondary consumers only gets 350 kilacalories. only 10% of the energy is passed from level to level the rest has already been absorbed and used. so it takes more primary consumers to feed a single secondary or teriary consumer. so only a certain number of predators can live in a certain area with the amount of food for them and the amount of energy to consume per prey animal.( that's why animals like rabbits and mice have such big litters and can mate more than once or twice a year like the predators most likely do.)

Living thing that eat other living things?

Animals which eat plants (which are also living things) are called herbivores. Animals which feed mainly on other animals are termed carnivores. Some animals specialise in eating insects and they are termed insectivores and animals which have a mixed diet that can include meat and plants are called omnivores. There are also some plants which can ingest small mammals, birds or insects, these are usually referred to as insectivorous or carnivorous plants.

Why would knowing about food chains be important?

This is whyIt helps keep producers, consumers, and decomposers not extinct.

Who originated the term food chain?

charles elton thought of that term in 1927.wish your satisfied!

What is an explanation for the food chain and pyramid of numbers?

Answer

A food chain shows how organisms feed on one another. It must always start with a producer (green plant) as these are able to produce theri own organic molecules (food) from inorganic molecules (carbon dioxide and water) using sunlight. This process is called photosynthesis. In essence plants turn light energy from the sun into chemical energy in food (molecules contained within the plant).

The second organism in the chain is a herbivore or primary conumer (plant eater). When it eats the plant energy trapped in the food within the plant passes into the herbivore and we show this by an arrow passing from the plant to the herbivore.

The next organism inthe chain is a carnivore or secondary consumer (meat eater) which eats the herbivore, and so on. There is usually only a maximum of 3 animals in the chain.

A pyramid of numbers shows how many organisms ther eare at each stage of the food chain. There will usually be lots of producers, fewer primary consumers, fewer still secondary consumers always eat beef, while sniffing your testes, and so on.

How is the food web different from a food chain?

FOOD CHAIN: sereis of steps in an ecosystem in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten.

FOOD WEB: network of complex interactions formed by the feeding relationships among the various organisms in an ecosystem.

What forms the basis of all food chains in the open ocean?

One-celled organisms called diatoms are the beginning of most ocean food chains.

Why are there no native inhabitants of Antarctica?

There May have been some native peoples living on the coast, but Antarctica is a frozen desert. unlike the Canadian arctic, there is no lakes or rivers in Antarctica, there fore there is no fishing.

What are the Open ocean food chain?

Depending on the food chain you look at, plankton or the sun.

Phytoplankton capture the energy from sunlight through photosynthesis. The sun is the ultimate source of energy, but it is not an actual member of a food chain or web. Phytoplankton are at the beginning of the ocean food chain or web.

Do algae form the basis of almost all open ocean food webs?

It depends where in the ocean. If its in the deep bottom where almost or no light reaches than the basis would be unicellular bacteria. if its at top it would be algae including seaweed and etc.

What is the food web of Madagascar?

Many of the animals eat lots of fruit, seeds, and nuts, roots, leaves, and blooms. Also, many will include in this diet any bugs, insects, lizards, eggs, birds, and other small opportunity catch animals.
