Dear Sam,

I am 13 years old and I live at Carrum Downs Caterina Place in melbourene. I want PlayStation 3 or XBOX 360 because I am bored this year. I have watched the footy show for 2 years and I have enjoyed it. I hate Gary because his face looks very mean and angry. I am kind of hairy as well. Did you know I don't celebrate Christmas and Easter. And don't forget I want PlayStation 3 or XBOX 360. My house phone is 97821205.

What are the afl game plans?

Well i don't know them all and as they are ever changing the questions answer will cahnge from year to year.

as of 2009 season, i will try to answer each teams game plan with the limited knowledge i have.

Collingwood: Play down the wing. when in possesion and going forward always go along the wing. Defense is a major aspect of there Game plan, don't let the oppostion get the ball this mean hold on to it and reack up posseions if it means retaing the ball in your own possesion. they longer they don't have it....the less they can score.

Essendon:

Play on play on play on. Take a risk and run with the ball through the centre of the ground. Do not deviate from this plan. but when going forward pick a target or a one on one. hope that someone can crumdb a goal if here is no contested mark. does not allow for much of a defensive game if sudden rebound. Although doesrapid succesion of goals. For or Against.

Sydney:

Choke the oppositon.

slow the game donw and play it at our terms.

Keep it low scoring and go one on one when need be.

Hawthorn:

Rolling defence.

I don't know exactly what this entails....i saw it in last years grand final against Geelong. Have a rolling zone that falls into place when the ball goes into defence....preferbably causing a behind and then garnering posesion of the ball to launch an atack from the back line.

Brisbane:

not sure under Micheal voss...but under Leigh mathews it was big built bodies kicking long. Win your one on one and kick long to limit one on ones. this worked when coupled with a team of superstar players. Voss, black, Akermanis, Leipicth

Geelong:

If you don't perform you are dropped. That is all i can take from how they play. great side. i suppose the other game plane would be called a GA.

Fremantle:

I fthey have a game plan they are not executing it.

Melbourne:

no gam plan, currently rebuilding. but will assume i will be along Kevin sheedy lines. hard at the ball.

Richmond:

they supposbly have a very good game plan but requires players that are highly skilled to get revenue from it. don't really know.

West coast:

nature of there large grounds in WA they like alot of space to run and there game is centered around that to assure atleast 50% season ictorys to hope for a top 8 from home games.

I cant think of any more types of games plan for indivdual clubs.

Aot have adopted the rolling defensive zone, but with newrule changes for rushed behinds that could catasthrophic for some teams.

please add to this or correct me... thanks.

Where are some former AFL players now?

Well, I wouldn't look too hard in the Super Rules competitions [retired players leagues - some players go beyond 60 even 70 in the Ultra leagues].

You would think that if they were genuine in their love of the game, you would find quite a few there, as the competitions cater for Over 35; but it's not like the tennis - where you do find a number of big names.

In the Victorian competitions, according to officials at the Essendon Super Rules Club - one of the very top-performing clubs at these levels, they are extremely rare. I am aware of Tony Liberatore, with few other former top flite players ... and I think Dermott Brereton's name might have been mentioned.

Big Bob Johnson, of Melbourne's heydays, ran a butcher shop; he is now dearly departed to the Big Sky. John Greening, former Collingwood star, is living on Gold Coast and still dabbles as a 'bookie'. Butch Gale, former Fitzroy Lions, owned a hotel, I believe. I spoke to Bob Skilton quite some years back managing one of these large packaging companies, and to Stuart Spencer, former 50's Melbourne Great, also now managing director of a removalist and packaging company in Tasmania. I also engaged the late Don Cordner some 20 years back - a former doctor. St Kilda's sole Premiership captain, Darrell Baldock, became a parliamentarian in home state of Tasmania; and David Parkin, Hawthorn and Carlton, and Ross Smith, St. Kilda, now both retired, became university Phys Ed lecturers. Former 1970's St Kilda Reserves player, Paul Skaftouros, now captains a snooker club, fishes daily and runs a catering business in Frankston area, besides regularly visiting former 60's Essendon Great, Bluey Shelton, on his farm in country Victoria.

Other Greats, such as Tim Watson, Gary Lyon, Sam Newman, and Denis Cometti now are television sports' personalities.

Carlton and Richmond and Essendon are the worst team in AFL?

Historically no, but rival supporters would like to think so. Richmond haven't been a force for the longest, last winning the flag in 1980, and can regularly be relied upon to finish ninth (out of 16). Essendon last won the flag in 2000 and Carlton in 1995.

What are the main rules in afl?

  • have to dispose of the ball legally: either wilth a kick or a handball (no throwing the ball)
  • no contact at any stage above the shoulders
  • when tackling, you have to tackle from above the knees and below the shoulders
  • when tackling you are not allowed to fall into your opponents back
  • you are only allowed to tackle an opponent if they have the ball, however you are allowed to bump the opponent if the ball is in a distance of 5 metres
  • you have to bounce the ball at least once every fifteen steps taken
  • if you kick the ball through the two largest posts at your attacking end it is a goal and your team is awarded 6 points
  • if you kick the ball inbetween one of the large posts and small posts or if it hits the large post, then it is a point and your team is awarded 1 point
  • if you catch the ball on the full without anyone else touching it, it is a mark and you cannot be tackled or made contact with after you have been awarded the mark, until the umpire calls play on
  • you can gain free kicks when an opponent does something that is against the rules towards or near you, also if you takle your opponent when they have had prior opportunity to dispose of the ball you will be awarded the free kick
  • you cannot be tackled once you have marked the ball or been awarded a free kick until the umpire calls play on, the umpire will only call play on if you run around off your mark or if you take too long disposing of the football
  • if you kick the ball out of bounds on the full then the opposition will be awarded a free kick
  • if the ball goes out of play after touching the ground atleast once there will be a boundary throw in
  • if some is tackled without prior opportunity to dispose of the ball and it is held in then the umpire will throw the ball up to resume play.
  • at the start of the match and after each goal is kicked the umpire will bounce the ball in the centre circle to begin play, there is only allowed to be four players from each team in the centre square until the umpire has bounced the ball and only 1 perso (the ruckman) in the centre circle during this time until the umpire has bounced the ball

i hope this helped a bit :)
