How does the injured reserve work in the NFL?

The injured reserve is a list of players who are injured and unable to play. NFL teams use the reserve so they can keep a player on the team but not take up a roster spot. A team is allowed 53 players on the roster.

Currently, the NFL's injured reserve rule restricts a player from returning to play during the season that he's placed on the list. For further information on the rules concerning the contract status and compensation for injured players, see the Collective Bargaining Agreement (or CBA).

This represented a rule change which, I believe (I'm still researching this), was instituted when the current CBA was ratified.

Prior to that, the injured reserve rule distinguished between a player going on the list before the final roster was set (in pre-season) and after that. A player going on injured reserve in pre-season was, like now, lost for the season but a player going on the list during the season only had to sit out for a minimum of four games.

Apparently, the NFL owners pushed for this rule change in an effort to police themselves. I've read that some, unnamed, owners (the NFL owners' meetings are private) felt that some teams were illegally using the injured reserve list to stash players who weren't really injured to circumvent the rules on roster limits (to gain a competitive advantage).

How do NFL conferences work?

For each conference (AFC and NFC) the four division winners receive the 1 through 4 seeds, ranked according to their season records. The two wild card teams (the teams with the best records that did not win the division) receive the 5 and 6 seeds. Example from the NFC after the 2007 regular season:

1. Cowboys 2. Packers

3. Seahawks 4. Bucs 5. Giants 6. Redskins During the Wild Card Weekend, 3 hosts 6 and 4 hosts 5. One game is played on Saturday and one on Sunday. Teams 1 and 2 get the week off (referred to as a "bye").

The following weekend is the Divisional round of the playoffs. 1 hosts the lower seeded survivor from the Wild Card round, and 2 hosts the higher seeded survivor. Again, one game on Saturday and one on Sunday.

The winner of the Saturday Wild Card Game will play their next game on Saturday. For example, the Seattle Seahawks beat the Washington Redskins in the Saturday wild card game and they will play the Green Bay Packers on Saturday in the Divisional playoff. Leaving the Dallas Cowboys to play the winner of the New York Giants vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

The next weekend is the conference championships. The higher seeded survivor from the Divisional round hosts the lower seeded survivor. The winner goes to the Superbowl to face the winner of the other conference.

If a football is on the out of bounds line is it in or out of bounds?

In association football, the ball must completely pass over the line: on is in.
In American football and rugby football, any contact with the line makes the ball or player out of play: on is out.

How many umpires are there for an afl match?

There are 2 goal umpires, one at each end, 2 boundary umpires, one for each side of the field, and 4 field umpires. I believe some of the state leagues may have only 3 field umpires, but not 100% sure on that.

What yard line is the extra point kicked off from?

The ball is spotted at the 2 yard line in the NFL and 3 yard line in College.

What happens when your team catches your punt?

Yes. You will see this happen when the punt is headed very close to the returner's end zone. Instead of the punt returner catching it and giving his team poor field position, like at the 5 or 10 yard line, he will usually let the punt hit the ground in the hopes that the ball will bounce into the end zone so a touchback will be called. In this case the ball would be brought out to the 20 yard line and the returner's team would go on offense. But if the punt team can get down fast enough, they are allowed to catch the ball as long as they do not interfere with the returner.

How far behind the line of scrimage does a field goal kicker put the ball behind the line of scrimage?

Typically it's 7 yards. So if the line of scrimmage is on the 35 yard line then you add 7 yards for the kickers depth behind the line and then 10 yards for the depth of the endzone totaling in a 52 yard field goal.

In Football where do you usually pass a ball in relation to your teammates?

Playing the ball on the ground when attacking you should give a lead in front of them of about 1-2 feet. Watch Pele in the 1970 Football World Cup Final to see it done at its best

if they are running forward, then a little way in front. if they are standing still and want the ball the pass should be directly to them.

When you are receiving a kickoff do you have to touch the ball in order for it to be a live ball?

Once the ball has gone 10 yards after being kicked during a kickoff, the ball is indeed live! During a punt, however, someone on the receiving team must touch the football for it to be live. The ball is always live during a kick. The only thing in question is who can recover, and when. On free kicks (including kickoffs and free kicks following a safety), the receiving team can recover the ball at any time, and the kicking team can recover either after it has traveled 10 yards or after the receiving team touches it after any distance. On scrimmage kicks (field goals and punts), the kicking team gives up possession of the ball unless (1) the ball fails to cross the line of scrimmage, (2) the kicking team then recovers the ball, and (3) the down played was not 4th down. In any other situation, the receiving team takes the ball. Once the ball crosses the line of scrimmage, the only way the kicking team can retake possession is if the receiving team fumbles, muffs, or touches the ball and the kicking team recovers.

If a Quarterback is sacked in his end zone does the other team receive possession of the ball and 2 points?

The other team would only get the ball under certain conditions. If the quarterback was sacked on the 4th down, then the opposing team would get the ball. That is not due to the sacking, however, it is due to the fact that you only get 4 downs to gain 10 yards before a turnover. If a quarterback is tackled and fumbles the ball, the other team can get the ball, but the quarterback will not be considered sacked.

What does yards mean in football?

Yards are a unit of measurement on a football field. A field has 100 yards. The end zone has 10 yards. Yards tell how far the ball has moved.

What is the perimeter of a NFL football field?

110 Feet (original answer) x 3 comprises only the interior length of a football field or 110 yards. The width is 65 yards and each endzone is 20 yards long. Therefore the perimeter of a regulation Canadian football field is (20+110+20)x2 + 65x2 or 280 yards.

Is there double overtime in football?

In college football, yes. If the score is tied at the end of an overtime period, the game continues. Overtime rules in college football are set up so that there cannot be a tie game ... overtime periods will be played until one team is ahead at the end of an OT period. In the NFL, not in the regular season. If no team scores in the overtime period, the game ends and is declared a tie. Obviously, in the playoffs there can be a double overtime as those games must have a winner.
