In the sport football a safety is worth how many points?

A team gets 2 points for a Safety in the NFL, which is earned by:

  1. Tackling the ball carrier in his own end-zone.
  2. Forcing the ball carrier to fumble in his own end zone and having it go out of bounds in the end zone
  3. Lateral in the end-zone that goes out of it
  4. Blocking a kick and having the ball go out of play in the kicking team's end-zone
  5. The ball carrier downs the ball intentionally in his own end-zone.
In addition to getting 2 points, the team that the Safety was scored on (the team that screwed up) has to kickoff to the team scoring the Safety, but with one big difference: unlike a regular kickoff, where the ball is set on a kicking tee (or held on it by a teammate) the kicker must free-kick the ball to the opposing team. The free-kick can be a punt, a drop-kick (bounce the ball of the ground and then kick it on the bounce up), or by a teammate holding the ball like in a normal kickoff, but without a kicking tee - the ball must be touching the ground.

Free kicks are performed from the 20 yd line, whereas a kickoff is performed from the 30 yd line. So in addition to the insult of being tackled or screwing up in your own end zone and giving points to the defense, the team that screwed up has to kick the ball in a manner that normally gives the opposing team excellent field position on the free-kick return.

How many points is a touchdown in the NFL?

A drop kick is worth 1 point if attempted as a Point After Touchdown, or 3 points if attempted as a Field Goal. The points are only rewarded if the attempt is successful of course.

A drop kick isn't worth any points, per se, it is simply another method of kicking the ball. It was replaced by the punt in popularity when the shape of the ball was changed (from round to more pointed ends) in the 1930s to make it easier to throw passes. However, the drop kick can still be used, and if a ball is drop kicked through the uprights, it is considered a field goal and worth three points. If a drop kick is used during a point after touchdown (PAT) try, and is successful, it is worth one point. One rarely sees a drop kick tried these days as the more pointed ends make the bounce of the ball very unpredictable.

When was instant replay first used in the NFL?

I am not sure of the exact game but it was during the 1999 season. Here is a link to a good description of instant replay over the years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant_replay -----
The answer above describes instant replay in the context of helping game officials make the correct call. The first time instant replay was used in an NFL broadcast was during a preseason game between the 49ers and Colts on August 6, 1965.

Who is allowed to catch a forward pass in football?

Introduction of the Forward PassNo one really knows when exactly the first forward pass was implemented in an actual game, but most historians do agree that in 1873 represenatives from Yale, Princeton, and Rutgers met to discuss formulating rules for this new game of football. The new rules consisted of reducing the number of men on the field from fifteen to eleven. Adding a fourth down before surrenduring the ball. Tackling below the waist was allowed. And lastly, the forward pass was leagalized behind the line of scrimmage. The NFL/AFL merger did not happen until 1970. But by then the forward pass was an intracate part of the game. (Scott Menzel)

When were nfl goal posts moved?

NFL goal posts were moved back before the beginning of the 1974 season. The was done to try and reduce the number of field goals kicked during a game, especially at the end of games, to make things safer around the goal line for the players, and make passing around the middle of the field at the goal line more productive.

When an offensive player's shin hits the ground while carrying the ball is he considered down?

Not in the NFLNope. At least not in the NFL.

If a ball carrier falls down on top of an opposing player and does not otherwise touch the ground, he is not considered down by contact and may continue to advance the ball.

Some part of the ball carrier's body, other than his hands or feet, has to make contact with the ground for him to be considered down(Technically, a knee or elbow or helmet has to make contact with the turf for the carrier to be down).

This is true for all levels of football play: HS, NCAA, NFL.

How much yardage is credited on a rushing play when a holding penalty is called from the spot of the penalty?

If an offensive holding penalty is called on a rushing play and the defensive team accepts the penalty, there is no play recorded as the down will be played over. Therefore, the ball carrier will no be credited with a rushing attempt nor any rushing yards.

What is a punt?

A punt is a gridiron football type of kick in which a player drops the ball and kicks it before it hits the ground. Punts are nearly always made on fourth down, when the offensive team does not want to risk giving up the ball to the other team at its current spot on the field (through a failed attempt to make a first down) and feels it is too far from the other team's goal posts to attempt a field goal.

It is also a type of shallow draught, flat bottomed, hand propelled water craft.
To punt means to kick the ball.

Where can you spot the ball on a two point convertion?

In US professional football (NFL) , the ball is spotted at the 2-yard line, the same location as the line of scrimmage for a kicked extra point (which actually travels 15 yards, from near the 5 yard line to the goalposts).

The NCAA (college football) places it at the 3-yard line.

Canadian football places the ball at the 5-yard line.
