What are the English lyrics to Schubert's 'The Trout'?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

i can remember only a small sample. i too learnt it at school...28yrs ago

As by a crystal brooklet I wandered on my way,

among the gentle ripples I spied a trout at play.

and here and there he darted , as swift as swift could be,

was never a fish so lively and frolicsome as he .

As by a crystal brooklet,

I wandered on my way

Among the gentle ripples

I spied a trout at play

As here and there he darted

As swift as swift could be

Was never fish so lively

Nor frolicsome as he.

Was never fish so lively

Nor frolicsome as he.

But skillful was the angler

With cruel delight

He sullied all the crystal water

And hid the fish from sight

Alas, by that deception

The fish, the enticing bait, sought out

And I was left lamenting

The fate of that poor trout.

And I was left lamenting

The fate of that poor trout.

Elizabethean SerenadeThe "Elizabethan Serenade" was popularized by the German choir, the Gunter Kallman Chorus sometime in the early Sixties and is featured on their album, "Elisabeth Serenade" (Polydor 237-310)

Elizabeth in German is Elisabeth.

The song begins;

"Listen to my song, Elisabeth..."

AnswerHoer mein Leid, Elisabeth

Von den alten Allee

Klingt bis zu den See

Und von jeden Baum

Es ist wie ein Traum.

Schatten der Vergangenheit

Shauen herab von alten Schloos

Und sie fliehen dich an

Ach sei doch gescheit

Versauem nicht die Zeit

Sonst tut es dir Leid.

Durch den alten Allee

Hinueber zum See

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Franz Kafka, born on the 3rd July 1883 in Bohemia, Austria-Hungary (what is now known as the Czech Republic), was an author of novels and short stories.

He was working for an insurance company when he began to write short stories in his spare time. Later he complained that he did not have enough spare time to devote to what he felt was his calling, which was writing stories. His (at the time) unique writing style, which included psychological brutality, archetypes of alienation, parent-child conflict, mysticism and labyrinths of bureaucracy, was influenced by his family life.

He is well known for works such as:

  • Die Verwandlung (The Metamorphosis)
  • Der Prozess (The Trial)
  • Das Schloss (The Castle)

He died of tuberculosis on the 3rd June 1924.

His lieder and art songs are considered Romantic but his symphonies are still mainly in the Classical style.
