The number of air miles you will earn depends on many other things, though:

1. What fare class is your ticket? Some cheap tickets may earn no miles at all. Others may earn a fraction of the actual flown mileage. Full-fare tickets may earn a bonus over the flown mileage.

2. What class are you traveling in? Many airlines give additional bonus miles for business class or first class travel.

3. What is your status with the airline? Frequent flyers who have used that airline a lot in the past often get additional bonus miles.

Calling specific airlines can help one to find a card, as well as calling different credit card companies.

It depends between which two points or if on a multi-city itineray. A trans-pacific flight would cost more FF miles than from Korea to China for example.

Star Alliance recently ran a promotion in which they gave away airline tickets and frequent flyer miles. To enter the sweepstakes, you had to answer five simple questions and one tie-breaker question. The tie-breaker question was 'How many kilometers did Star Alliance carriers fly in July 2010?'

Frequent travelers typically are members of one or two frequent flyer clubs. They try to minimize the number of airlines that they use so as to easily and quickly accrue large amounts of frequent flier miles on the one or two airlines. By default, then the frequent flier miles quickly accumulate in one frequent flyer program therefore enabling the frequent flyer to have free flights sooner.
Airports typically have one or two airlines that are the largest or that have the most flights that arrive or depart from that airport.

A frequent flier that travels for business will typically use those airlines because they provide the most options to fit the schedule they need to either fly out or fly home (for example in Dallas, American Airlines would be the choice at the DFW International Airport, while in Atlanta it would be Delta). Since the business frequent flier will be able to get reimbursed for the cost of their flight from their employer, the price of the flight, while important, will many times be a secondary concern. Most companies will have a travel policy that will provide guidelines on the costs that an employee (business frequent flier) can pay for a flight.

Additionally, the frequent flier that travels for leisure will try to pay for their flight using their frequent flier miles that they have earned/accrued. If they do not have enough to exchange (a domestic flight is will typically cost 25,000 miles from the freq flier account) then a leisure frequent flier will probably try to balance a low price flight with the schedule that they are trying to achieve.

A trans-pacific flight such as this (round trip) is usually available for about 100K frequent flier miles. If you go out of season it maybe possible to go for less. Business class would usually cost more.

Delta Airlines will do this trip for 25,000 Frequent Flier miles.

You can find the miles used on the United frequent flyer program online on the United website. After you get on the United Website you can log-in to the Milage Plus Program and see the miles used.

You can join via multiple websites that are partners with them. I do not know of all the websites that are partners with them,but I myself signed up through Upromise.

From what I have reviewed in forums this was the best way to get rewards I actually like i.e. cold hard cash! Most other websites you sign up through only offer you magazine subscriptions, frequent flier miles, and coupons to other sites. Rewards depend heavily on which site you sign up through.

The money you acrue in your e-rewards account is not the amount of money you will actually earn, you will not become a millionaire doing surveys. Through Upromise for every $30 you earn in e-rewards pts you get, you can redeem them as $5 cash. As it goes $60 for $20 and the best value $120 for $50. It is best to hold out on an survey site for the biggest rewards as it actually takes less pts per dollar to earn if you do the math.

Air travel and judicious selection are ways to build up airline miles. Traveling by air is an option to many locations and offers the advantage of quicker travel time than competitive options (bus, car, ship, train) so it can be used quite frequently and its accumulation can be monitored for less frequent claims (on lower rewards of lower point build-ups) and more solid commitments to the higher rewards requiring higher point build-ups.

Frequent flyer miles can be used however the person with the frequent flyer miles wishes to use them. I would personally use mine on a funjet vacation, but its really up to you.
