Are goodman furnaces any good?

Goodman backs their furnace with a 10 year parts and lifetime on heat exchanger warranty on most models. so they must be pretty confident about their product. The older entry level furnaces had a noisier burner than most but the new models are about the same with other makes. Some might say it is cheaply made but all entry level furnaces wether it is Trane,Carrier or Lennox are cheaply made. You just pay a lot more for those furnaces because of all the advertising. As far as reliability and performance, I don,t see any problems with the current models. Some will say that the sheet metal cabinet is not as thick as the other brands but that only matters if your going to sleep on top of it.The important part is that it is sized properly and installed by a reputable company.I have installed and service all these brands and I

don't see the advantage in installing the more expensive brand cause they all break and some were even DOA. I have had customers who insist in installing Carrier and Trane and get upset when their unit breaks down and can't believe that it did especially when the one year labor warranty is up.

Would you recommend guardian furnaces?

Guardian is the economy line of furnaces made by York. They are what they are - an economy line furnace. Don't confuse them as an equal to a Trane, Carrier or Lennox caliber of furnace. They are definitely built "cheaper" than those. However, I would put them as a step above Goodman, Tempstar, Whirlpool, and other bottom line furnaces. We sell YORK equipment and have been very pleased with the Guardian units. Not many intro line units can say they have a rating of 95.5% efficiency. Comparing the units to are other intro line (weatherking) and a friend of ours intro line (Goodman) they have a much heavier built cabinet and are much more versatile.

What causes lights to get brighter when furnace motor comes on?

A loose or disconnected neutral wire at breaker box or at the appliance. Depending on what is on when and if two or more motors are running at the same time. This can as well have the opposite effect too, lights too bright.

Although loose connection can cause a problem and you should have all the connections checked, it could also be caused by several other reasons. You distance from and the load on the transformer, the size of you service conductors or lateral, the age and maintenance of your appliances. I have found out that light dimming happens in almost every house but some people are more sensitive to it than others.

Usually dimming of lights when an appliance kicks it is caused by a voltage drop of the supply caused by a heavy demand for current when the appliance initially starts. This is usually associated with an appliance that has a motor such as a refrigerator, furnace, washing machine, vacuum cleaner etc. Motors demand about 6 times their steady running current when they first start up and this can be a significant surge of current for maybe a half second or so till the motor has started and is up to speed. This basically momentarily 'overloads' the supply and lowers the voltage available to other devices, thereby causing them to momentarily slow down (if a motor) or dim (if it is a lamp).

If you switch to the new power saving compact spiral bulbs, their internal electronic ballast compensates somewhat for line voltage, so they won't react as noticeably to heavy loads starting up elsewhere in your house. The same is true for fluorescent tube fixtures with electronic ballasts.

One more point:If the lights are on a dimmer, they are very sensitive to change in voltage and will change their brightness disproportionately to the slight changes in voltage caused by motors or other heavier loads switching off and on.

Your electronic ignition furnace will not light?

Just had the same problem for a gas furnace with an electronic source to light and required a repairman. The lighter switch has frizzled perhaps due to condensation. Why does furnace freeze?

The coil you are referring to is the evaporator, it is inside the air-handler, which also contains the heater. The evaporator freezes up when the air conditionong system is low on refrigerant. What happens, is that since the refrigerant is low, it expands more than normal which cools the evaporator more than it is designed to. As the air passes throught the evaporator, moisture in the air freezes on the cold evaporator fins. This will eventually turn into a block of ice, which will impede the air flow. Once the air flow is restricted, the air conditioner will not cool very efficently if at all. Remember that the air conditioner vapor system is a sealed system. The refrigerant will last forever unless it leaks out, so you need to find and repair the leak to stop it from re-occuring. Some companies will just recharge it, especially if it's a very small leak. That way, you'll have to call them again when it starts to freeze up.
