Genetically Modified Organisms are living things that have modified through biotechnology. Many fish at the pet store have been modified to have brighter more vibrant colors. Some roses have been modified to produce blue blooms. Mosquitoes that are resistant to malaria have been created in labs. While GMOs have proven to be helpful in many ways, there are safety concerns due to the lack of regulation.

Do specialized cells in a unicellular organism perform specialized jobs?
Unicellular organisms do NOT have specialized cells. By definition.
How does Venezuela feel about GMOs?
Venezuela has gone back and forth on the GMO topic for years. On 2004 Chavez said transgenic food was not in the interests of the nation, but by 2009 the company Monsanto is still here, and distributes seeds to farmers. The worse thing is mos of the population doesn't even know it. Apart form Monsanto, research laboratories have developed GMO plants but they don't ave permission to plant them or sell them. Laws on the subjects are extremely general, there is a 2000 law on biodiversity that says on art. 98 that transgenics are to be treated by the state with utmost care, whatever that means. Biotechnology on this law is just as general a topic and there isn't anything conclusive on this law about it.
A new law is being discussed by the Assembly, but semingly, it will be as general as the previous law.

Does Philadelphia Cream Cheese contain genetically modified organisms?
The only organisms in cheese are the (mostly semiwild) bacteria that turned it from milk to cheese, so probably not.
Why is the biotech industry afraid of labeling GMO's?
They are afraid of labeling them because the public is starting to get afraid of the affects of GM foods on their bodies. Labeling them would make the public aware, and since a huge percentage of American foods contain GMOs, businesses could lose tons of money.
It would take good evidence that GMO foods differ from their natural counterparts in terms of safety or nutrition. The best evidence available currently suggests that GMO foods are equivalent to natural foods in these terms. The food is therefore unlabeled, because the information a label would convey is irrelevant as far as consumer choice goes.
That's the science end of it anyway. I can't speak much to the legal end.
Do scientists know the long lasting effects of GMOs?
No one knows the long lasting effects of GMOs, though some say people have been eating them since 1996 and that is evidence that there are no long lasting negative effects of GMOs. Since long term studies on rats that showed serious effects of GMO consumption have been discredited, and GMO foods are not labeled, it is hard to determine what the long lasting effects of GMOs are. There is evidence, though it is not accepted as valid by some, that people who are put on a non GMO diet have improved health.
Since at least 70% to 80% or more of the corn grown in the United States is GMO, it is likely that HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) sold in the U.S. is GMO.
Genetic modification has been a fact for centuries through selective breeding. Though we can manipulate some genes directly today great care is taken.
With any new technology there are always unforeseen risks hence the safety precautions.
Risks that can be predicted are taken into consideration with the processes.
However there is no evidence that there will be mass epidemics, cancers and mutations occurring.

There are no certificates that certify a product is totally free of GMOs, not even the Non-GMO Project or organic certifications.
