Giraffes have small horns on top of their heads, with the females being smaller than the males. These horns are formed from cartilage and are called ossicones. It is with these horns that the Giraffe can be sexed, as females have a tuft of fur atop of the horn, whereas the males horns are bald. Some males develop calcium deposits on top of their heads, creating an illusion of three or more horns, however these are not true horns and giraffes only ever have two ossicones.

The main feature that Giraffes are known as having, is an very long neck. This is used to help the Giraffe browse leaves at the very tops of trees, meaning that there is a lot less competition for their food source, as most other herbivorous are much smaller. They posses seven vertebrae in their necks, the same as our necks, but they are elongated are separated by highly flexible joints. The base of the neck has spines that project upwards and form a hump over the shoulders and they have anchoring muscles to hold the neck upright.

The Giraffe also has elongated legs, with the forelegs being on average 10% longer that that of the hind legs. They normally walk quiet slowly, but when pursued or scared they can run extremely fast. This high speed can not be maintained for long periods of times and they can not give a lengthily chase. When a lion hunts a Giraffe, it will try to knock it off its feet, but when the Giraffe is attacked in this manner it can become quite dangerous and will defend itself by kicking with tremendous force. A single well placed kick from an adult Giraffe can shatter a lions skull or brake its spine. Lions remain the only serous threat to Giraffe apart from humans.
