Girl Scout Cookies

The licensed bakers (Little Brownie Bakers and ABC Bakers) can offer up to eight varieties of cookies for Girl Scouts to sell.

They must always sell Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Sandwich/Do-si-dos® and Shortbread/Trefoils.

The other five optional cookies can be changed each year, however, the Samoas®/Caramel deLites® and the Peanut Butter Patties®/Tagalongs® are so popular that it is unlikely they will be changed.

For 2014, ABC Bakers also have Lemonades, Thanks-a-Lot, Cranberry Citrus Crisps, and Chocolate Chip Shortbread.

Little Brownie Bakers also have Savannah Smiles, Dulce de Leche, and Thank U Berry Munch.

The first troop known to sell Girl Scout cookies was the Mistletoe Troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma in December of 1917. The girls and their mothers baked cookies in their homes. They then sold the cookies in the school cafeteria. Selling cookies was a good way to earn money to finance troop activities.

They do not. In fact, they do not often eat cookies or so I've heard.

Girl Guiding Scotland is a part of Girl Guiding United Kingdom.

Each World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) member country/organization sets their own guidelines for money earning projects for their members, so it is possible that Girl Guiding UK does not sell cookies.

Girl Guiding UK does provide information about a variety of fundraising projects troops may do in their local communities.

The first cookies sold by Girl Scout troops in the 1920's and 1920's were sold for 25 to 35 cents per dozen. In the mid-1950's, cookies were being sold for 50 cents per box and at 65 to 75 cents per box in the mid 1960's. By the 1970's, the price of a box of Girl Scout cookies was about $1.00 to $1.25 and by 1986 they were selling for $2.00 per box. In the 1990's the cookies were selling for $2.50 per box and by 2000, the price was $3.00 per box. In the 2011 Girl Scout cookie sale, most councils were selling the cookies for $3.50 to $4.00 per box.

For the 2014 Girl Scout Cookie Sale, ABC Bakers Thin Mints have about 32 cookies per box and Little Brownie Bakers Thin Mints have about 28 cookies per box. Note that the boxes are filled by weight, not by the amount of cookies, so the number of cookies may vary.

Each Girl Scout council determines their sales period, price, and sales methods. Some councils take pre-orders while others have cookies on hand for direct sales. Most councils also set up booth sales for Girl Scout Troops while all girls are encouraged to make individual sales.

GSUSA set up a web site where anyone can enter their zip code and find out which council they can order from and when that council's cookie sale starts.

You can also go to the Little Brownie Bakers Cookie Locator web site. It will give you information about current cookie sales and contact information for the council office.

It depends on the Girl Scout council. They are making changes in the council product sales. So, yes, you might have to pay for your Girl Scout cookies at the time you place your order or you might wait until they are delivered. Some councils are now having the girls have the cookies with them so you pay and receive your cookies all at the same time - rather than placing orders. Cookie booths are also more available, and again, you pay for and received your cookies all at the same time.

There are seven Girl Scout councils serving the US state of Virginia. Each Girl Scout council determines the price of cookies sold in their council.

Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council are selling their cookies for $3.50 per box as are Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast.

Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay are selling their cookies for $4.00 per box as are Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital and Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline Council, Inc.

No information could be found about cookie prices for Girl Scout Commonwealth Council of Virginia, Inc. and Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians, Inc.

Since the 2009 Girl Scout Cookie Sale is now over, the only way to possibly find a cookie order form would be to contact someone who collects Girl Scout items or contact a Girl Scout council and ask if they might have saved any forms.

Girl Scout cookies cost about $0.50 to $1.00 in 1970.

For the 2011-2012 Girl Scout Cookie Sale, the price of cookies in the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana council is $4.00.

"Girl Scout cookies are not a potentially hazardous food from a food-safety perspective" so they don't require an expiration date, says food-safety expert Paul VanLandingham, professor of hospitality at Johnson & Wales University's Center for Food and Beverage Management in Providence, R.I.

In 2008, 15-year-old Jennifer Sharpe from Dearborn, Michigan sold 17,328 boxes of cookies. This was a new record for her troop and possibly an all-time record.

From 1978 to 1990, Elizabeth Brinton of Falls Church, VA, sold a total of more than 100,000 boxes of cookies. Elizabeth sold 11,200 boxes of cookies in 1985 and 18,000 boxes in a later year.

Of the five types of Girl Scout cookies which are sold every year (Thin Mints, Samoas/Caramel deLites, Peanut Butter Patties/Tagalongs, Peanut Butter Sandwich/Do-si-dos, and Shortbread/Trefoils), the Shortbread/Trefoils account for the lowest amount of sales at 9% of the total sales.

The other varieties, which change from year to year, account for 23% of the total sales, so sales of those varieties are likely to be lower than that of the Shortbread/Trefoils.

Each Girl Scout council sets the price for cookie sales in their council.

For the 2013 Girl Scout cookie sale, the price is either $3.50 or $4.00 per box.

Girl Scouts of the USA has a web site where entering the zip code gives the information about the local council and their cookie sale.

If the council currently has cookie booth sales, there will be a link to a list of cookie booth sales nearby. There will also be a way to provide contact information so the council can send either information or a Girl Scout in order to make a sale!

Once a cookie sale ends in one Girl Scout council, cookies which are left are sent to another council for their cookie sale. Unopened cases at the end of all sales are returned to the cookie baking companies. The Girl Scout council has to pay for any cookies they keep, so it would not be a wise use of funds to keep a lot of cookies instead of sending them back to the cookie bakers.

The cookie baking companies are also able to plan so that they aren't left with a lot of extra cookies. Girl Scout councils are able to contact the companies to request any cookies which are left.

Councils may keep Girl Scout cookies on hand or may request more from the cookie companies for a variety of reasons. If someone calls and says they did not receive their cookie order, the council will try to find out what happened, and may decide to replace the cookie order. They might also use the cookies for gifts, such as giving boxes to the delegates to the council's delegate assembly.

From 2006 to 2014, Girl Scout councils which use ABC Bakers sell/sold the Thanks-A-Lot cookie.

The Thanks-A-Lot cookie is a shortbread cookie with fudge on the bottom. The cookies have the words "Thank You", in one of five languages, embossed on them.
