What is Worth of Burke golf clubs and irons custom made 288-9 made around early50's?

Burke persimmon woods and irons from the 30's to the 50's were very well made and the Persimmon used was air dried which in my opinion made better Persimmon wood golf clubs. What a set of Burke Recorder Persimmon woods are worth? I paid $30.00 for a driver and 2 wood in "fair" condition. My source of knowledge is from the Ralph Maltby/Golfworks 1999 Golf Club Identification and Price Guide. Mr.B.M.Phillips - Canada - Maxwell1956@cogeco.ca

Will a stiff graphite shaft be similar to a steel shaft?

The companies that make shafts for golf clubs will have a specification listed on the shaft itself such as "Stiff" of "Juniors". We call it "Flex". The flex standard may be the same on a graphite or steel shaft made by one company and nearly the same as made by another company. It is kind of like sizes for cloths. Both graphite and steel shafts come in "Stiff" flex. Companies may use the word "Mens" in place of "Stiff" or "Juniors" in place of a "not so stiff" shaft. Consult with your local Golf Coach or Golf Professional and they can explain more about the flex in a shaft or other things like "kick points" in a shaft.

What distance should clubs be hit?

It depends on the person swinging the golf club. Distance is created by combining clubhead speed, launch angle, and squareness of impact(efficiency). Therefore clubs are hit different distances depending on the person playing the shot. A good starting point is a golf club distance calculator at http://www.csgnetwork.com/golfclubdistancecalce.html Each iron typically differs in loft by 4 degrees in the short irons and 3 degrees in the long irons. Men typically have a 8 - 12 yard distance gap between each club. Women typically have a 6 - 10 yard distance gap between each club. To find out how far you hit each club take your irons to the driving range and verify the yardage to each flag (either with a distance range finder or by walking the distance). You should be recording carry distance with your irons, not total distance. With each club in your bag hit 10 good shots and note where they land. Then take the average of this group of balls as the distance you hit that club and record that as the maximum distance you should attempt a shot with that club. Most amatuers hit their shots short so over clubbing usually isn't that bad of a thing. If you don't want to take the time to hit range shots to determine each clubs distance then use the following guide as a starting point. If you notice you overshoot or undershoot the hole with good shots then you need to adjust the distance accordingly. 56 degree SW - 85 yards

52 degree SW - 95 yards

48 degree PW - 105 yards

9 IR - 115 yards

8 IR - 125 yards

7 IR - 135 yards

6 IR - 145 yards

5 IR - 155 yards

4 HYBRID - 170 yards

3 HYBRID - 180 yards

5 Metal - 190 yards

3 Metal - 200 yards

Driver - 220 yards So if you have 115 yards to the pin you should use a 9 iron; if you have 116 yards you should use the 8 iron.

I want to reshaft my callaway x-18 steel shaft clubs to graphite what would be the best shaft to use?

If you want a high quality shaft, you should look along the lines of UST, Grafalloy, Aldila or Mitsubishi. I cannot tell you which one you should get because I do not know your game/age/ability etc. The best thing to do is to go get custom fit and try out a few different shafts. Nearly all shafts have different kick points and produce different launch angles. The problem with Callaway clubs though is that shafts go through the head to the bottom of the club, some golf shops may actually shy away from fitting new shafts to these.

How do you register ping golf clubs?

You go to the Ping website (see related links) click 'Register clubs' which is at the top, then you sign up as a member, from where you can keep track of your game, and join the Ping community. The really good thing about Ping is, if you have had your clubs custom fit, the serial number is unique to you, with the club information. So if you have your clubs stolen or lose them, they can rebuild them to your exact specifications and it's like having the same club again.

IN GOLF What is the origine of saying fore when ball is in dangerous direction?

Currently there are three serious explanations for the origins of term FORE!

  1. Because golf balls were expensive, golfers employed ‘Forecaddies’ to stand where the ball might land and reduce the number of lost balls, as is done in tournaments today. In 1875, Robert Clark mentions that Andrew Dickson performing this role for the Duke of York in 1681 and describes it as “what is now commonly called a fore-caddie”. It is probable that golfers called to their “Forecaddie!”, who would always be some distance ahead to draw attention to the fact the ball was coming and, in time, this was shortened to “Fore!” The almost contemporaneous appearance of the terms caddie, fore-caddie and fore! supports this theory over the others.
  2. A second explanation derives from the military battle craft of musket days, when rank after rank would fire fusillades, some over the heads of those in front. It was speculated that the term Fore! might have been used to warn those in front to keep their heads down. Modern historians pour cold water on this theory, partly because it is difficult to relate it to a Scottish golf connection and partly because the relevant military terms used do not appear to be connected. However, this theory may in fact be a misunderstanding of the theory below.
  3. There is a third explanation, which appears utterly implausible, but which is an outside possibility. It derives from a story told by John Knox (1505?-1572) the ‘hellfire’ protestant reformer. He tells the tale, as only ‘hellfire’ preachers can, of someone arriving at the East Port (east gate) of Leith. This story was noticed by Dr Neilson and subsequently
