Gray Foxes

Gray foxes are medium sized canines who are distantly related to their more famous cousin, the Red fox. Gray foxes are found from southern Canada down to the extreme northern parts of South America where they inhabit forested areas and generally stay away from human habitation as they do not adapt well to urban areas. They are one of two canine species that can and do climb trees to obtain food or flee from predators.

Do gray foxes migrate?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Gray foxes have to move to find food, shelter, mates...basically they have to move to survive. They may change the location of their den if they feel threatened or if they feel their kits (babies) are threatened. It may also just simply be time for a new den. Wild animals move around quite a bit, especially females with young. Larger predators who could potentially kill the young have a harder time finding the mother and her little ones that way.

Is the gray fox an herbivore a carnivore or an omnivore?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Gray foxes, like most foxes, are omnivores, meaning they eat both meat and plants. They will sometimes eat grass to settle their stomachs like dogs do - and while they eat meat when it's available they will also eat fruits and berries when it's not.

The gray fox, while having an omnivorous diet, is actually a carnivore, in the dog family, Canidae.

Can a gray fox mate with a red fox?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No. Sorry. The Red fox (Vulpes Vulpes) has 38 Chromosomes and the Gray Fox (Urcyion) has 66 chromosomes. They cant mate anymore than a dog and a fox (any kind of fox) can. The red fox is an invasive species and is taking over the grey foxes range all over North America. If they could interbreed, there would be hybrids all over.

How much would a gray fox cost?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You shouldn't be able to buy a gray wolf. That is, unless you're a animal reserve owner or something.... And even then, I'm pretty sure it cost a couple thousand.
Seriously you want to a wolf just buy a dog. Wolves are wild animals.

There is no price for a beautiful creature like wolves because there are many different prices. Mostly like $1,000-$9,000 well be my guess. And if you add twice as many toys for the biggest dog ever. I love wolves and well travel great lengths for one touch.
