How high do bobwhite quail fly?

When they are flushed they can fly about 20 feet off the ground and for about 50 to 60 yards. They seldom fly which is why they don't fly far, they do most of their travelling on the ground. Do chickens fly much? Quail are basically small chickens, so think of it that way. :)

What do quail do when it rains?

Mostly they will seek shelter under natural cover. The oil that birds have on their feathers is not a water-proofer, the waterproof nature of feathers is a function of their structure. Birds with oil glands surgically removed are still waterproof but suffer vitamin D defficiency. (Only a few storks and closely-related birds, such as turkey vultures, have any appreciable sense of smell).

Do quail mothers come back to abandoned eggs?

I live in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona. About ten days ago I scared a Gambel's Quail hen from her nest of thirteen eggs while I was trimming some brush in my backyard. I immediately stopped and have left the area alone all this time, in hope that she made her way back. I have been hesitant to inspect too closely to see if she had returned until just a few minutes ago. She was not there, but all the eggs remain. I don't know if she just happened to be out feeding or what. I get the feeling that she has not and will not return. I guess we'll have to wait and see if the chicks show up anytime soon. I am trying to find out some information on what to do now. On one hand, I would love to retrieve them and incubate them in my home, but I don't want to take the chance that the mother is still around and will end up doing a fine job herself. So there you are....I haven't answered a darned thing. - Cactus Bob

Collecting quail eggs?

The collection of quail eggs should be done over a period of about 5 days. The eggs from several mated pairs can be collected and placed under a brooding pair. Since quail prefer to be "alone" in separate cages and left undisturbed the extra eggs should only be placed under the hen when collection is complete. Storage should be in a cool (40F) dark place and turned every 12 hours for the five day period.

Can gambles quail see in colour?

I can't speak scientifically, but they see something. When I am in full camo coyote hunting they let me get within twenty yards almost always before they run or fly. When I am dressed in orange or solid colors they start running forty yards away. Like I stated before they see something or know the difference between a hunter with a rifle or shotgun. This is not occassional, this is everytime. I have nothing to back it up , but experience.
