After Cheddi Jagan also suffered heart problems, she stepped down, and Hinds stepped down from 1999 August 9 to 11 to allow President-Elect Bharrat Jagdeo to become the Prime Minister. Hinds was reappointed as soon as Jagdeo became the President. Hinds has continued as the Prime Minister of Guyana ever since.
