My answer is going to be a general comment on the 'celebrity' industry as a whole and is not to deride Harry Styles personally in anyway. I've got nothing against him and only wish him the best in his career.

If you look at the Media (Magazines, Books, Websites, and TV etc), Harry Styles certainly does come across as a good hearted, kind and friendly young man with a somewhat cheeky and naughty but playful side. He does what many young guys his age do which is often the subject of much media gossip and speculation. All such factors go towards creating the public image of a celebrity.

In reality, how much of it is really representative of him as a real person? In my humble opinion, only those close to him and those who knew him before he hit the big time know what he is really like as a person. As with any celebrity, especially when it comes to teen idols, we are only shown the side of them that the media and showbiz industry want us to see. I'm sure it's no different for Mr Styles and his band, One Direction.

It's no secret that a lot of modern popular music is more about selling an image than the actual music itself. The image is based on looks, personality, attitude etc. The music industry can always manipulate, enhance or even fabricate such qualities to suit their agenda. Celebrities are often told how to act and what to say in public to maintain the image so as to continue selling themselves and making money.

So such people may seem perfect on the surface but they're human too. Many youngsters look up to boybands, girlbands and popstars in general, hoping to be like them (or be with them) because of the image they represent but the truth is that celebrities face many problems and troubles that the rest of us do. If you met the real person behind the public facade, you could even end up disliking your idol. There is an old saying that most people are better off never meeting their heroes and idols. To you, a young teen idol (such as Harry Styles) may be your world and passion but to him, you are most likely just another fan among the masses of fans.

Of course, everyone has bad days and fame can do terrible things to people - some celebrities have been known to become arrogant and totally self absorbed once they achieve fame (I personally knew someone who became like this after a few small TV roles).

The image of a boyband member would be a young man or boy who is exceptionally good looking, kind, charming, nice, protective, funny, cheeky, selfless, romantic, not shallow and gentlemanly, some are sweet, some have attitude. It may well be true that these people don't have some of these qualities in their real life outside of the media image. They also represent someone who is successful and has lots of money. Basically everything a young girl would want in a boyfriend. The image is evident from the song lyrics, demeanour on stage and interviews. It's a successful formula and a time honoured way to make young girls part with their disposable cash in spite of the music itself. The main point is, is that every fangirl out there needs to be able to believe that she could has a real chance to be with her idol, that some day he'll love her as much as she loves him. It's all part of the marketing strategy.

Despite the squeaky clean image, away from the spotlight teen idols have been known to act like spoilt brats, binge drink, sleep around, look down on the common folk, treat the opposite sex like trash, squander money, get into fights (usually with the press) and plenty of other misdeeds. Often the reality is that these people are shallow despite their songs and interviews that try to portray otherwise, as let's face it they're usually only ever seen dating bimbos and models.

Getting back to the original point of the question which was about Harry Styles from One Direction and what he's really like as a person. Well, I don't know him personally so I can't say. I can say however that he definitely ticks many of the points I've raised above. He certainly has charm, charisma, is very good looking and is indeed very successful. I'm sure he even ticks some of the negative points too. The point of this answer is that we should not be too quick to judge a person by what is presented in the media as it is just the surface and often superficial. To get a better picture you need to look past the newspaper headlines and magazine covers and realise that celebrities and teen idols are people just like everyone else.
