What was the importance of Harvard University?

Asked by Wiki User

AFTER GOD HAD carried us safe to New England, and we had built our houses, provided necessaries for our livelihood, reared convenient places for God’s worship, and led the civil government, one of the next things we longed for and looked after was to advance learning and perpetuate it to posterity; dreading to leave an illiterate ministry to the churches, when our present ministers shall lie in the dust. And as we were thinking and consulting how to effect this great work, it pleased God to stir up the heart of one Mr. Harvard (a godly gentleman and a lover of learning, there living among us) to give the one-half of his estate (it being in all about £700) toward the founding of a college, and all his library. After him, another gave £300; others after them cast in more; and the public hand of the state added the rest.

Where did the name ivy league come from?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Ivy League may refer to the NCAA designation of an athletic conference. But whether on not the term is used in that sense or to designate the eight institutions of higher education which were founded in the Colonial period, the schools are Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Princeton, and Yale. When America was young and growing, Colonial leaders determined that opportunities for higher education should be made right here. This would permit students to avoid going overseas to attend schools, and would also open spots for students who would not have been able to go overseas to get a higher education. It took some time and cost some money, but it was worth it. We've got world-class universities here now.

What is formal report?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Formal reports can provide an employer with the opportunity to record your progress within the company. A properly conducted report and the notes can be very powerful in the sense that it can be a tool to help employees progress in the company or their particular work. The report can include decisions to train you or to promote you in any way. But if your behaviour is unsatisfactory then this will be recorded with targets that you are meant to be achieving and that you have agreed to meet.
