Heisman Trophy

At the U.S. Naval Academy, the Heisman Trophy winners are Joe Bellino (1960) and Roger Staubach (1963). The Naismith Award, which recognizes outstanding college basketball players, has not been awarded to a Navy athlete as of my last knowledge update in October 2023. The Heisman awards highlight Navy's football legacy, particularly during the 1960s, while basketball has seen other institutions dominate the Naismith accolades.

Tim Couch finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1998. He was a standout quarterback at the University of Kentucky, where he set numerous school and NCAA records during his college career. Couch's impressive performance throughout the season earned him significant recognition, but the award ultimately went to Ricky Williams of the University of Texas.

As of October 2023, three Black quarterbacks have won the Super Bowl: Doug Williams, who led the Washington Redskins to victory in Super Bowl XXII; Russell Wilson, who won with the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII; and Patrick Mahomes, who won with the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV and again in Super Bowl LVII. These victories represent significant milestones in NFL history, showcasing the success and impact of Black quarterbacks in professional football.

There have been two: Pat Sullivan in 1971 and Cam Newton in 2010.

I believe there have been four winners since the NFL-AFL merger. Barry Sanders was the last to win both. He won the Heisman in 1988 and shared the NFL MVP with Brett Favre in 1997.

Marcus Allen won the Heisman in 1981 and the MVP in 1985.

Earl Campbell won the Heisman in 1977 and the MVP in 1979.

Finally, OJ Simpson won the Heisman in 1967 and the NFL MVP in 1973.

Don't forget Paul Hornung -- the first to do it.

In 1968, while playing for the University of Southern California Simpson earned the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award.

OJ Simpson's Heisman trophy and some other belongings were auctioned off in February 1999. The money from this auction (approximately 500,000) was given to the Goldman family.

OJ Simpson had several trials. Lets start with the murder trial. Accused of killing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman OJ was aquitted of both.

After the non guilty criminal trial, the Brown and Goldman suied Simpson in civil court for monetary damages caused by the death of their loved ones by Simpson. He wasn't so lucky this time. Different jury, different judge, different hair-do on Marsha Clark. Made a big difference this time. Simson was order to pay the damagaes. Which this leads us to his 3 trial.

Trying to confiscate priceless football and sports artifacts that were in someone else's possession, at the end of a gun I might add, Simpson was caught redhanded. So he now sits in prison is Nevada, hopefully reflecting on some personal improvement.

Footnote:Marsha Clark did have a new 'do' but she was not prosecuting at the civil trial. Civil and Criminal are separate courts.
