In 1770, Lieutenant James Cook (not yet a Captain) claimed "New South Wales", which was actually Australia's eastern half, for Britain. He claimed the east coast under instruction from King George III of England, but did not claim the western half.He also claimed New Zealand for Great Britain.

Henry Hudson had four voyages. The first was in May of 1607 to August of 1607. He sailed around Greenland. He spotted a number of whales. The second voyage in 1608 from April to August was around Norway in the Berents Sea to explore the coast of Siberia. Some of Hudson's men claimed to see a mermaid. The third voyage started in April of 1609 to November. He was sailing for the Dutch this time and the Dutch wanted Henry to return to the Netherlands but the English put him under house arrest. He had discovered the Hudson River, and New York Bay. The fourth voyage led Hudson to Hudson Bay hoping to find the Northwest Passage. His men mutinied and left him to die. The forth voyage started in April of 1610 and the ship returned in October of 1611. The mutiny was July 22, 1611.

Henry Hudson's first and second voyages were paid for by the English Musovy Company, a group of merchants who frequently traded goods with merchants in Moscow, Russia. His third voyage was paid for by the Dutch East India Company. His fourth and final voyage which led him across the North Atlantic and to the Hudson Strait and then the Hudson Bay was financed by the English merchant Thomas Smith.

He went on behalf of the Portuguese government, as his name would indicate, to find more efficient routes to get to South and East Asia: the places where spices, at the time highly prized in other places, came and still largely come from.

Henry Hudson was never actually seen by surviving people when he died so that is uncertain, but he was last seen in Northern Canada. He was the captain of a ship when his crew mutinied, and he was put in a little boat with his son and a couple other loyal sailors and set adrift. It's most likely he died of hypothermia, or dehydration but his body was obviously never found.

His next voyage (1609) was sponsored by the Dutch East Indian Company, then in 1610 he was sponsored by the Virginia Company (which sponsored expeditions to Jamestown) and British East India Company. This voyage faced a mutiny and he was cast out to sea somewhere off the canadian coast. So the answer would sort of be England, but he didn't go directly to the King or Queen. Rather he claimed land for England but was sponsored by individual groups of people via proprietary companies
