the oxpecker is a bird that rides on the buffalos back, and eats the flies and other insects off its back. its very nice of the little birdy. :)
Hippos are herbivores, so they don't eat meat. However, they have been known to kill crocodiles. In a few cases, hippos act as scavengers, but I don't think they are known to have eaten dead crocodiles.
As a mammal hippopotamus is not descended from dinosaurs but it did have ancestors in the dinosaur time. All organisms on earth have ancestors dating to the time of the dinosaurs and from before then. Otherwise they could not exist today.
According to current theory:
65 million years ago, when the dinosaurs ended, hippopotamuses and whales were the same animal.
About 55 million years ago the animal that would become hippos split from the animal that would become whales.
We have found fossils of a 48 million year old whale ancestor that we call Indohyus. Artistic reconstructions of this animal are currently the closest idea we have for what hippos looked like in the time of dinosaurs.
Yes, a werewolf has sharp and large enough claws/teeth to pierce into the hippo, elephant, or rhino's hide.
A hippo's heart rate is much slower than a human's, for a few reasons. The simplest reason involves their size, as larger creatures with larger hearts simply don't need as fast a heartbeat to pump the blood around their body healthily. More unique to hippos, but potentially found in similar water-dwelling animals, the hippo's heart rate drops when they dive underwater, allowing them to stay submerged longer without needing more oxygen.
i am pretty sure that it is possible but i do not know. it would probably be called a rhinopotamous or hipposerous.
Yes. Most are born in the water and have to learn to swim almost from the moment they're born.
The hippopotamus is the third-largest land mammal and is found in Africa. They have very few known predators. Crocodiles, lions and hyenas may attack young hippos, but generally stay away from adult hippos.
More than 100 people die from hippopotamus' each year! The only reason is that the people threaten the animal.
A bit of both actually.
We regulate rivers, we pollute, we build farms, villages and cities - which doesn't help the hippo.
But we also establish nature reserves and game parks, employ wildlife wardens and rangers - which does help the hippo.
Overall though the hippo would probably have done better if there weren't any humans at all.
Hippos don't get there teeth cleaned that often. If they are Hippo's in a zoo, the owner of the zoo or a zoo keeper should brush the animals teeth so the animal can stay healthy. Hippo's get that bad breath from eating things they are not supposed to eat and from zookeepers waiting too long to clean the germs off the teeth.
In most cases hippo mothers give birth to only one young one. But twins are also known to be born but at a pretty rare ratio.
It's estimated that 200 people are killed each year by a hippopotamus. Divide that number by 52 weeks in a year and you get an average of about 3-4 deaths per week.
males ranged between 1500-1800 kg
and females between 1300-1,500 kg
here's some additional info from the san Diego zoo...
Weight: males-3,525 to 7,055 pounds (1,600 to 3,200 kilograms); females-average 3,086 pounds (1,400 kilograms)
Encyclopædia Britannica lists the hippo's mature weight as a hefty 3.3 to 5 tons, The Encyclopedia of Animals: Mammals reports it as a respectable 5300 pounds, and Zoo Animals: A Smithsonian Guide states that it is a mere 2500 pounds. According to the London Zoo, the highest recorded weight for a mature hippo is 8,920 pounds.
as the king of the river/ swamp etc al. the hippo is slightly stronger
but if your talking about hunting then the crocs are definitely stronger
Female Hippos attain sexual maturity at around 6 years of age. Males reach sexual maturity at around 7.5 years of age. However, males don't get to mate until they are much larger and older. Hippos have a gestation period of around 8 months after which a single hippo calf is born. Baby hippos are born under water and weigh around 25 to 45 kilograms in weight (60 to 110 pounds). They are around 125 cms (50 inches) in length at birth.
