The stuff they sweat out act a little as a natural sun screen, which helps protect their skin when they aren't submerged.

It's fairly similar to the waxy oils us human produce that makes our foreheads and noses look all shiny and sometimes block our pores.

The average weight for Adult Males is between 1500 and 1800 kilograms which works out to 3300 to 4000 pounds in weight. Females are much lower in weight and weigh between 1300 to 1500 kilograms which works out to around 3000 pounds. Adult Males weighing around 3000 to 4000 kilograms have also been seen and recorded. Male hippos grow throughout their lives and that is why they can grow to such huge weights.
