It was so badly damaged that it would basically have to be rebuilt, so the decision was made to scale it down to a reserve base to save money. The DOD already knew that they were going to relocate to another location for SOCOM someday, so they let it fold.

1926 Miami: The blow that broke the boom : The 1926 storm was described by the U.S. Weather Bureau in Miami as "probably the most destructive hurricane ever to strike the United States." It hit Fort Lauderdale, Dania, Hollywood, Hallandale and Miami. The death toll is estimated to be from 325 to perhaps as many as 800.

The "Great Miami" Hurricane was first spotted as a tropical wave located 1,000 miles east of the Lesser Antilles on September 11th. The system moved quickly westward and intensified to hurricane strength as it moved to the north of Puerto Rico on the 15th. Winds were reported to be nearly 150 mph as the hurricane passed over the Turks Islands on the 16th and through the Bahamas on the 17th. Little in the way of meteorological information on the approaching hurricane was available to the Weather Bureau in Miami. As a result, hurricane warnings were not issued until midnight on September 18th, which gave the booming population of South Florida little notice of the impending disaster.

How long did hurricane Andrew last in Miami on August 24 1992?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If a hurricane does hit Miami it will typically be over the city for half a day or so, though a slow moving storm may stay around for longer. The hurricane as a whole will last a few days or even a couple of weeks, but it won't be over the same area that whole time.

What caused Hurricane Andrew to move along the coast?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hurricane names are named by when the hurricane happens. Andrew was the first storm of the 192 Atlantic hurricane season so it got an "A" name. (i.e. first hurricane of season might get the name Ally and the second Barry and the third Corinne, etc.) The meteorologists at the National Hurricane Center comes up with a list of 21 names for each hurricane season. If a hurricane is really wild, the name will be taken out and replaced by another one beginning with the same letter. Names are used every 6 years (like I said, wild hurricane names are taken out). If the number of hurricanes exceeds 21, then meteorologists will need to use Greek letter names. In 2005, there were so many hurricanes that they ran out of names and used the Greek letter names such as Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Epsilon, and Zeta.

Hope this helped!! :)

How did people suffer after Hurricane Andrew?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I remember Andrew quite well. I was in Miami, where I'm originally from. The worst damage was to the suburb of Homestead (southern part of Miami). These homes were new, but quickly built using poor materials and techniques. Entire neighborhoods were completely wiped out in this area. I should say that this caused all the building codes in South Florida to be updated, making, Miami, now very hurricane resistant. You specify "after," so: The electricity was out for over a month for everyone in the city, some had no power for several months. The ENTIRE city had no power, so there were: no traffic lights, all food could not be stored in a refrigerators. Restaurants that weren't destroyed could only serve fresh food. For the 1st few days it was very difficult to move around the city since almost every small, and some medium sized tree was littering the street. The streets were filled with boats, overturned cars, dumpsters, satellite dishes. People had fish in their pools, things were very chaotic. Schools were forced to open weeks or months later than usual. Some schools could never open, from the damage. Looting became a major problem, store owners began arming themselves against this. Thousands of people had to live in "tent cities" built by the national guard. The national guard helped quite a bit. Hurricane Katrina passed over Miami causing some damage as well, I should note that if it weren't for andrew, Miami may have had worst damage. Windows are harder, doors open differently, window shutters are very common, and so are gas powered generators. All new, after Andrew. You never here about Miami and Katrina, only New Orleans, because Miami is a great example of a very wealthy city that spent very much effort in Hurricane safety. Hope that helps, those are just some things I witnesses with my own eyes, theres much more though. Jorge
