Number one cause is vacuum leaks. Check for vacuum hoses broken or off. Then failed gaskets around the intake system. Intake gaskets, Plenum gasket, throttle body gasket. One way to do this is to spray carb cleaner around these gaskets and look for change in idle. Number 2 cause is failed automatic idle control valve.

check engine shut off electronic valve on injector pump -most likely valve is stuck or fuse is blown -use a test light to check for power at the switch on the pump when key is turned on -to clean valve u need to remove the electrical wire with 8 spanner then undo solonoid valve located at the back top of the injector pump -usually a 25 or 27 mm. spanner will fit -make sure u dont loose the the poppet valve or spring and o ring when removing --when its out you can test on a 12v or 24 v depends on truck voltage - battery with live on pin and earth on frame of valve -valve should pull in when given power-

no.1 could be your clutch master or slave cylinder fluid has run out by leaking out the cylinders
2.not enough presssure in hydraulic system to enable clutch to disengage when clutch pedal is depressed.
3.faulty transmission -no oil in gearbox
4. broken components in box like fork or selector shaft lock pins or worn out synchros(which will cause it to grind or grate when engaging gears)
5.also check gear lever ,if bottom end that is below the ball pivot ,the part that pushes and pull the selectors is not worn or broken -
6.if the gear feel like it clicks in when it is engaging but wont move then check clutch plate is not worn (burnt out )or broken -
there are many more checks to do , these are the the most common faults.

I am a diesel technician and black smoke usually means too much fuel. Check injectors and check turbo for oil leak inside.
Agreed I'd like to add i have had exhaust restriction's cause black smoke on these models as well. I am also a certified isuzu technician and work on them everyday.

Check to make sure all connections to the starter are properaly installed, Check battery connections to see if their is corrision, or check cables from battery to other connections are not loose, if so, correct them, you can also check for burn't out fuses or relays related to the ignition.

On that Model year their is a small drain on bottom of the fuel filter. Its located back left of engine and is the only filter for the fuel system. It doubles as main filter and water seperator all in one housing. Good luck
