It's not just a cute pet to make Billy look silly. Few animals have the symbolic heft of the raven, which are representatives of death and the afterlife in many cultures. I believe it's a stand-in for Billy's deceased wife, Laura. (He mentions that he looked for the stolen money in rooms he "hasn't even been in in since I lost Laura.") The constant squawking and fluttering presence of the reminder of her highlights his struggles since her passing: alcoholism and forgetfulness. At his lowest point, when he puts his head down on his desk and sobs, it lands on him and squawks. It's worth reading Poe's "The Raven" again in this context!

Years ago it used to be "It's a Wonderful Life. This is no longer true as NBC now has exclusive rights to the film and airs it only twice each December. It used to be in the Public Domain (stations could air it for free). But the music is copyrighted.

Nowadays, the movie "A Christmas Story" (a movie about a little boy who wishes for a bb gun for Christmas and is consistently told he'll shoot someone's eye out) plays multiple times during the Christmas holiday on TBS, along with "Elf" (a film starring Will Ferrel who plays a man raised as an elf in the North Pole, returning to New York City to find his father). But they don't air 300 times each December.

My search thus far points to "It's a Wonderful Life" but I haven't seen the actual film recently or in its entirety...I only saw that scene on a TV in the background at a party and remember it was a pretty entertaining moment. Well, this virtuous man is going to commit suicide because his life is terrible. The angel is trying to keep him alive because god loves him, and he is valuable.

So, the angel shows him what the town would be like without him. It's terrible, because he made lots of contributions to it which have now disappeared.

So, he decides not to, and then later, to his surprise, the whole town appreciates it and gives him the money he needs.

George was rich with friendship and loving relationships. That meant more than the money that Mr. Potter had.
