The cure was to install a new set of motorcraft platinum spark plugs, to replace the original motorcraft platinum spark plugs. In my case I only had 41,000 miles on the original platinum plugs but 2 of them had gaps wider than the recommended range. I suspect that the 2 were not gapped correctly from the factory because the other 6 were gapped correctly.
