Or is it a 'hammerless' (one you cannot see)

Numeric markings, exact copyright wording, other wording on frame?

Is it nickel plated? Blued? Engraved?

And of course, with all the other info, the serial number.

Note: It is very important to find out when this pistol was made before any attempt to fire it. Some were made for black powder and modern smokeless powders are way too powerful for the models not designed for it. Also, Iver Johnson made pistols from the late 1800's through the 1970's, maybe a few after that, and while they did a pretty good job, any gun should be examined by a gunsmith if you don't know it's age.

Yes Iver Johnson made a 38 caliber revolver. I have one that my older brother (age 94) gave me which I think was my Mothers weapon. I just got it back from a gunsmith friend of mine and he took it apart and cleaned and checked it out and said it is ready to fire. He told me to be sure and specify 38 S&W ammunition for it. The only number I could find (36210) is on the bottom of the trigger guard which I assume is the serial #

well its hard to give you a good estimate because facts about the Iver jonshonguns are hard to find.

there where millions of Iver Johnson pistols made from 1871-1993.

but an average one sells for $50-$250 depending on which model and condition, send me pics of the gun via email and i should be able to help you find out more about it.

please include pictures from all angles and if you could let me know all the writing on the top of the barrel as well as the serial # which can be found (u have to remove the cylinder) between the bar the cylinder goes on and the and the top of the latch

Yes they did, it's the model designation for a starter/dog training/blank fire gun based on their model 50/55/57 solid frame revolver. The frame and all internal parts in the mod 56 are identical to those of the 'regular' revolvers, the changes are simply a much shorter cylinder (5/8 of an inch long instead of 1 and 7/16 inch) and a solid barrel with a spike that extends rearwards from the breech towards the cylinder.

As with their regular .22 cal revolvers in this series, it is an eight shot cylinder.

The S suffix simply stands for short barrel (about 2") and the A means it has a loading gate (earlier versions of this series did not).

A word of caution here, if you run across a Mod 56 that has a regular cylinder and barrel you are dealing with a gun that has been converted and is not legally a saleable item, while doing such a conversion may, technically, not be illegal, selling it would be. The person doing the conversion is legally the manufacturer and while it is not, technically, illegal for a person to manufacture a fire arm, it is unlawful to sell or distribute it unless this person has a fire arms manufacturer's licence.

It's known as a "44 Bulldog" caliber and hasn't been loaded in many, many years. It is only available through custom reloaders such as "Gad custom cartridges" for $35 a box + shipping. I have an old "Bulldog" made in 1887 that uses this ammo. They're fun to shoot if they are tight.
