The Separatists were religious groups of people who wanted to remain separate from the other groups in the English colony. They spent sixty five days in the Atlantic Ocean throughout their journey. In 1620, they travelled on the Mayflower with the intention of landing in Jamestown. Eventually they made it to the north of Cape Cod. Although the Separatists' ship had been blown off course, it is possible that this was part of their original plan. They may have intended to travel to a place where they would be left alone to live the way that they wanted.

Roanoke Colony, founded by Sir Walter Raleigh, preceded Jamestown but it disappeared. Had it survived it would have been the first English colony.

Another factor was the "gentlemen" which where the large portion of the settlers that did not want to work and had less experience working.

The search for wealth in Jamestown, established in 1607, was initially focused on finding gold and other precious metals. However, after several years of hardship and limited success in finding gold, the settlers shifted their focus to more sustainable economic activities, such as tobacco cultivation. By the early 1620s, tobacco became a lucrative cash crop, leading to the colony's economic viability and growth. Despite the initial quest for instant wealth, it was agriculture that ultimately secured Jamestown's future.
