A tragic hero is someone who's actions where heroic despite a bad outcome. A good example of tragic hero's are the soldiers who were defeated at the Alamo, they knew they were outnumbered and that defeat was inevitable but they stayed and fought bravely anyways. They could have fled or surrendered.

Generally the same factors as ordinary heroism are what makes one a tragic hero. There is nothing heroic about Jimi Hendrix. Despite his success as a musician he died at his own hand, a result of a drug overdose.
