The 'Grease'look was very popular in the fifties and sixties (in fact, it was reffered to as 'greaser') and could be obtained by rubbing simple car grease through the hair. A bit messy and unhealthy for the hair in the long run, yet visibly appealing all the same. I expect that car grease wasn't used in the movie production, however, for the sake of it. They might have used alternative hair products to obtain the look.
